Cubs add four to 40-man roster

The Cubs protected four players from the Rule 5 draft that will be held at the Winter Meetings in December. RHP Duane Underwood, OF Jacob Hannemann, LHP Jack Leathersich and C Victor Caratini were all added to the 40-man roster.

Underwood, 22, fought injuries in 2016 and only appeared in two games in the Arizona Fall League. He’s only pitched 100 innings once in his career (2014-Kane County) and went 0-5 with a 4.91 ERA in 13 starts in AA before landing on the DL.

Hannemann was the Cubs third-round pick in 2013 despite only playing one year of college baseball at BYU. The 25-year-old hit .247/.326/.426 with 26 stolen bases in 74 games in AA Tennessee before going on the DL in July. Hannemann is currently playing outfield for Santurce in the Puerto Rican Winter League.

Claimed off waivers from the Mets in Nov. of 2015, Leathersich re-signed with the Cubs for the 2016 season. Coming back from Tommy John surgery, the 26-year-old appeared in 11 games for Tennessee (0-0, 3.48 ERA, 10.1 IP, 12K) and finished up the year at Iowa, not allowing an earned run in five games. He made his MLB debut for the Mets in 2015, going 0-1 with a 2.31 ERA in 11.2 innings (17 games).

Caratini was acquired from the Braves at the trade deadline in 2014 and was named a post-season and mid-season all star for Tennessee in 2016 after hitting .291/.375/.405 with six homers and 47 RBI in 115 games. The switch-hitting backstop continues to develop behind the plate and is considered the top catching prospect in the organization.

Cubs claim Rollins

The Cubs have claimed left-handed reliever David Rollins off waivers from the Mariners. Rollins appeared in 11 games for the M’s, posting a 7.71 ERA and a 2.04 WHIP in 9.1 innings. Originally drafted by the Blue Jays in 2011, Rollins worked as a starter but moved to the bullpen with the Mariners, making his debut in 2015.
