A look at Cubs news and prospects playing in Winter Leagues

Cubs have released RHP David Patton, lost LHP David Hollins on a waiver claim and the rest of the winter league action.

Cubs Release Patton

The Cubs have released right-hander reliever Spencer Patton. Acquired from Texas during the off-season last year for minor league infield prospect Frandy Delarosa, Patton made five trips to Wrigley during the 2016 season and went 1-1 with a 5.48 ERA in 16 games (21.1 innings). He recorded 11 saves for Iowa and appeared in 35 AAA games, posting a 0.75 ERA over 36 innings with 59 K.

Cubs lose Rollins

Just days after being acquired on waivers from the Mariners, the Cubs lost LHP David Rollins to a waiver claim by the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. Rollins appeared in 11 games for the M’s, posting a 7.71 ERA and a 2.04 WHIP in 9.1 innings. Originally drafted by the Blue Jays in 2011, Rollins worked as a starter but moved to the bullpen with the Mariners, making his debut in 2015.

Torres AFL MVP

Former Cubs prospect Gleyber Torres was named the Most Valuable Player of the Arizona Fall League. The infielder led the league with a .403 average and was also tops with a .513 on-base percentage and a 1.158 OPS. In 18 games for Scottsdale, Torres collected 25 hits, including three homers and four doubles. Signed by the Cubs as part of the 2013 International Class, Torres was traded to the Yankees in July in the deal that brought Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs. Torres was considered the Cubs top prospect at the time of the trade and was hitting .275/.359/.433 with nine homers, 47 RBI, and 19 stolen bases in 94 games at High A Myrtle Beach. The 19-year-old batted .254/.4341/.385 in 31 games for Tampa in the Florida State League. Torres was named the Midwest League Prospect of the Year in 2015 at South Bend after hitting .293/.353/.386 in 119 games.

Venezuelan Winter League

Nov. 22Gioskar Amaya struckout as a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning of Aragua’s 6-5 win over Magallanes. SS Carlos Penalver made his winter league debut, lacing a single in his only at-bat for Aragua. 

Nov. 21—No games scheduled.

Nov. 20—No Cubs prospects saw action.

Dominican Winter League

Nov. 22—DH Juan Perez (.293) had his third straight two-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and three RBI in Agulias’ 6-5 win over Toros.

Nov. 21—RH Juan Paniagua (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 4.2 IP) fanned two in 1.2 scoreless frames during Estrellas’ 6-4 win over Escogido. It was his third game and his first since Nov. 8.....RF Juan Perez (.282) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Aguilas’ 3-1 loss to Toros. 

Nov. 20—LF Juan Perez, Aguilas, was 2-for-4 in a 3-0 win over Licey.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Currently, Christian Villanueva is the only Cubs’ prospect in the league and he hasn’t seen any action since Oct. 28. Villanueva, who broke his leg in spring training and missed the entire 2016 season, is a member of the Cubs 40-man roster and was hitting .278/.359/.444 with three homers and seven runs scored in 15 games for Obregon.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Nov. 22—Games rained out.

Nov. 21—CF Jacob Hannemann went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base (5) and a run scored in Santurce’s 4-1 win over Mayaguez. RH Corey Black (0-0, 0.82 ERA) got charged with an unearned run in the ninth, allowing two hits. 

Nov. 20—Game were rained out.
