A look at Cubs news and prospects playing in Winter Leagues

Recap of the Cubs AFL position players.

Arizona Fall League

Cub had three position players suit up in the AFL this fall.

Larry Kave/Myrtle Beach Pelicans

2B/OF Ian Happ hit two homers in the title game and knocked in four runs to help lead Mesa to the AFL title. The Cubs first-round pick in 2015 appeared in 19 games and hit .236 (17-72) with 15 walks and a .375 on-base percentage. Happ smacked a pair of homers and drive in eight runs. The 22-year-old will hit AAA sometime during the 2017 season and could possibly make his MLB debut next year with the North Siders.

Rikk Carlson

The Cubs other top prospect, Eloy Jimenez went deep three times and slashed .255/.323/.491 with 10 RBI in 15 games (14-for-55). Jimenez missed  time with a leg injury and only had 15 at-bats in November. The 19-year-old wowed scouts and evaluators with his impressive long drives during BP and will start the year in Myrtle Beach. Jimenez could be promoted to AA by the end of the year, depending on how fast they want to bring him along. I look for Jimenez to hit his way out of the Carolina League if he can stay healthy.

The Cubs top catching prospect, Victor Caratini, didn’t tear up the AlF but the switch-hitting backstop did post a 338 OBP while hitting .226 (14-62). He knocked in four runs while drawing 10 walks with 14 strikeouts. The 23-year-old Puerto Rico native was recently added to the Cubs 40-man roster as he was Rule 5 eligible. Caratini should start the year in Iowa after 115 games in AA (.291/.375/.405) in 2016.
