A look at Cubs news and prospects playing in Winter Leagues

Cubs sign lefty reliever and non-tender four on 40-man roster.

Four become free agents

By not tendering contracts for the 2017 season to LHP Gerardo Concepcion, 3B Christian Villanueva, LHP Conor Mullee and LHP Zac Rosscup, all four have become free agents and are no longer on the 40-man roster. Concepcion was signed by the Cubs out of Cuba back in 2012 and he made his pro debut last year after excelling in Tennessee and Iowa. Villanueva was part of the deal with Texas that brought Kyle Hendricks to Chicago in July of 2012 and spent his entire time in Cubs organization in the minors. Mullee was claimed off waivers from the Yankees on Nov. 2 and Rosscup spent 2016 on the DL after making his Cubs debut in 2013. The Cubs 40-man roster stands at 35.

Cubs sign Duensing

The Chicago Cubs have signed left-handed reliever Brian Duensing to a one-year deal for a reported $2 million. The 33-year-old was signed by the Royals last off-season and released in May. He they agreed to term with the Orioles and only appeared in 14 games, missing time with an elbow injury. He spend the first seven years of his big-league career with the Twins, making 61 starts while appearing in 354 games. Duensing is 42-37 with a 4.13 ERA in over 660 innings with 438 K and a 1.38 WHIP. He should compete for a bullpen spot, especially if Mike Montgomery joins the rotation.
