Cubs announce their minor league managers and coaches for the 2017 season.

A majority of familiar faces return for 2017 as the Cubs announced their field staff and coordinators for the minor league season.

Cubs announced their 2017 field staff for the minor leagues on Friday and all the full-season managers are returning. Here’s a rundown of the coaches for 2017: 


Marty Pevey is back for his fifth season in Des Moines and was the Cubs catching coordinator for three seasons from 2010-12. Rod Nichols returns for his second season as Iowa’s pitching coach after three years as Philadelphia’s bullpen coach. Former big leaguers Desi Wilson and Mariano Duncan will combine their knowledge as the hitting coaches for the I-Cubs. Wilson was the Cubs AA hitting coach for the past four year and Duncan spent the past four years as the hitting coach for High A Daytona and Myrtle Beach. Shane Nelson is the athletic trainer, John Fierro, assistant athletic trainer and Ryan Clausen, strength and conditioning.


Mark Johnson is back for his second year in Tennessee and seventh in the Cubs organization with managerial stops in Boise, Kane County and Myrtle Beach. Terry Clark, the Mariners minor league pitching league coordinator from 2014-15, starts his second year as the pitching coach. Jacob Cruz, who spent 11 years in the majors (Giants 1996-1998, Indians 1998-2001, Rockies 2001, Tigers 2003, Reds 2004-05), joins the organization as the hitting coach after spending six years in the D-Backs minor league system in the same role. Ricardo Medina, who spent last year as the bench coach in South Bend, starts his 19th season with organization as the Smokies assistant coach. Mike McNulty is the trainer  and Mike Megrew is the strength and conjoint coach.

Myrtle Beach

Back for his 29th year as a manager and 12th with the Cubs, Buddy Bailey looks to make it two straight Mills Cups in his second year. Anderson Tavares, with the organization since 2007 when he served as a pitching coach in the Dominican Summer League, is back as the Pelicans pitching coach. Guillermo Martinez, who served as South Bend’s hitting coach, moves up to High A in the same role and Ty Wright takes over as the assistant coach, after spending last year as Eugene’s hitting coach. Toby Williams is back as the trainer and Jason Morriss will serve as the strength and conditioning coach.

South Bend

Jimmy Gonzalez returns for his third year at the helm in the Midwest League and his fifth with the Cubs. Brian Lawrence moves up a level from Eugene as the pitching coach, his second with the Cubs. Jeremy Farrell, Mesa’s hitting coach in 2016, will serve the same role in South Bend and Jonathan Mota, who spent 11 years in the Cubs minor league system, is the club’s assistant coach, his second as a coach. Logan Severson is the athletic trainer and Ryan Nordtvedt as the strength and condition coach.


Jesus Feliciano is back for his fourth season with and Cubs and second with the Northwest League champs. David Rosario is the team’s new pitching coach after spending last year in South Bend. Juan Cabreja makes the move from assistant coach at Myrtle Beach to hitting coach in short-season. Gary Van Tol is back for his second year as a coach. James Edwards is the team’s trainer.


Carmelo Martinez is back for his third year as the manager in the Arizona Rookie League and his 20th with the Cubs. Armando Gabino moves up from the DSL to serve as the pitching coach. Osmin Melendez the hitting coach after spending last year in Tennessee as the assistant coach while Leo Perez is the assistant coach, his ninth with Cubs organization. After five years in the Cubs minors, Ben Carhart will serve as the club’s rehab coach in his first season. Sean Folan is the trainer.

Cubs 1

After two years managing the Cubs in the Venezuela, Pedro Gonzalez is back for his second year in the DSL. Eduardo Villacis returns as the pitching coach and Carlos Rojas is the team’s infield coach for the second year. Arnoldo Goite is the trainer and Manny Estrada is the strength and conditioning coach. The hitting coach has yet to be determined.

Cubs 2

Lance Rymel, the Cubs 28th round pick in 2012, will get his chance to manage as he takes over the helm in the DSL. Rymel was Mesa’s rehab coach last season. Jose Cueto is back as the pitching coach and Claudio Almonte will serve as hitting coach, after managing last year. Carlos Ramirez and Antonio Valerio are both back as coaches for their second seasons and Yovanny Rosario returns for his third year as assistant hitting coach. Adrian Pettaway is the trainer and Amaury Gonzalez is the strength and conditioning coach.

Winter League Recap

2B/LF Bryant Flete (.250) was 2-for-4 with a double in Zulia’s 9-2 loss to Caribes in Venezuela. Flete was the only Cubs prospect to play on Friday.
