The Cubs have brought back minor leaguer Elliot Soto and a winter league recap

After getting shipped to the Marlins for Dan Haren, the Cubs have re-signed minor leaguer Elliot Soto.

Cubs re-sign Soto

The Cubs have signed infielder Elliot Soto to a minor league contract and assigned him to Iowa. Soto was the Cubs 15th round pick in 2010 out of Creighton and was traded to the Marlins in July of 2015, along with P Ivan Pineyro, for P Dan Haren. Soto spent last season at AAA New Orleans, hitting .241/.358/.297 in 62 games. Before the trade, Soto was having his best season in the Cubs system, slashing .275/.388/.314 with 47 runs scored in 88 games at Tennessee. The 27-year-old is a solid defender and can play second and short.

Venezuelan Winter League

Bryant Flete was used as a pinch runner in the ninth inning of Zulia’s 1-0 loss to Caribes. Flete got off to a hot start but is hitting .248/.328/.345 in 39 games......2B Carlos Penalver went 1-for-5 with a walk and two runs scored hitting leadoff in Aragua’s 16-2 win over La Guaira. In 11 games, Penalver is hitting .267/.333/.267.

Dominican Winter League

3B Chesny Young went 2-for-3 with a run scored in Escogido’s 6-5 win over Gigantes. The 25-year-old is hitting .329/.424/.342 in 21 games.

Puerto Rican Winter League

RH Miguel Mejia tossed a scoreless inning of relief for Caguas in their 4-1 loss to Mayaguez. Mejia, who recently re-signed with the Cubs, has appeared in 19 games and is 1-1 with a 1.89 ERA over 19 innings.
