A look at Cubs news and prospects playing in Winter Leagues

Ryan McNeil finished the AFL season strong and a winter league recap.

Arizona Fall League

Ryan McNeil came to the Cubs in the front office’s first draft in 2012 (3rd round—Nipomo High School, CA) but after appearing in eight games, had Tommy John surgery and missed the 2013 season. The right-hander threw 16 innings in Boise in 2014 and logged a career-high 61 frames for South Bend in 2015 in 32 appearances. McNeil led the Carolina League last season with 22 saves and posted a 2.33 ERA in 54 innings. In the AFL, McNeil had some rough outings and his overall numbers weren’t great—0-0, 8.18 ERA, 11 IP, 9 H, 5 BB, 13 K—but he finished the season with three perfect outings, fanning seven over four innings. McNeil sports a fastball in the mid-90s and also throws a slider and change-up. The 22-year-old should get a shot at the closer role in Tennessee in 2017.
