Starting a series on the 2016 draft picks and the winter league playoffs are set

Connor Myers reached Low A after the draft and got the start in center in the playoffs. Post-season underway in the Winter Leagues.

2016 Draft Class Update— Connor Myers

No one advanced farther after the draft than Connor Myers, the Cubs 27th round pick out of Old Dominion. The all-time leader in games played at ODU, Myers finished his first pro season in the MWL playoffs with South Bend. The Maryland native made his pro debut in the Arizona Rookie League and was sent to Boise after a handful of games in the Mesa. The right-hander went 9-for-34 (.265) in 10 games for Eugene before heading to South Bend in late July. He ended the season as the starting center fielder, playing in 34 games while slashing .221/.258/.344 and showcasing his plus defensive skills. The 22-year-old showed some pop, hitting three homers, while swiping six bases. In the playoffs, Myers was 4-for-12 with two RBI and three extra base hits in three games against West Michigan. While all three of his homers cleared the left-field wall, Myers showed the ability to hit the ball to all fields. With Darryl Wilson expected to start in center for South Bend, Myers may have a hard time finding playing time in center but he did play eight of his 10 games in right field while the duo paired up in Eugene. And it could be Myers, not Wilson, who gets promoted to Myrtle Beach when a spot opens.

Venezuelan Winter League

Playoffs begin Jan. 2 with three best-of-seven series—Margarita vs. Lara; La Guaira vs. Caribes; and Zulia vs. Aragua. Carlos Penalver has been starting in the infield for Aragua while Bryant Flete has appeared in 42 game for Zulia. Jhondaniel Medina has thrown 19 innings of relief for Lara.

Dominican Winter League

Round-robin play has begun and Aguilas leads the pack with a 3-1 mark. Licey (2-1), Escogido (1-2) and Gigantes (0-2) round out the field. Cubs prospects Chesny Young and Taylor Davis are on the roster for Escogido.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Playoffs begin Jan. 2 with Mexicali facing top-seeded Navojoa in a best-for-seven series. The other two match-ups are Mazatlan and Los Mochis, and Hermosillo against Cullacan. No Cubs prospects are currently playing in the league.

Puerto Rican Winter League

The playoffs begin on Jan. 3 with Carolina and Santurce squaring off in a best-of-seven series while Mayaguez battles Caguas in the other semi-final. Santurce is the top seed after posing a 28-12 mark during the regular season. Cubs prospects Corey Black and Jacob Hannemann both played for Santurce but have returned to the states. RHP Miguel Mejia works out of the bullpen for Caguas and Yasiel Balaguert has spent most of the year at first for Carolina.
