2016 Draft Class Update— Wyatt Short, LHP
Cubs are firm believers in the Cape Cod League and Short was one of eight players from the draft class that spent a summer in Massachusetts. A sinking fastball in the low 90s, a plus breaking ball and a solid change-up, the Cubs selected the left-handed reliever out of Mississippi in the 13th round (pick #404). His first pro season was impressive. Staring his career in Eugene, Short appeared in 15 games and the only thing he allowed was one unearned run in 15 innings while converting all seven save opportunities. He did issue seven free passes but fanned 14 and held hitters to a .104 BAA while sporting a 0.80 WHIP. Left-handers were 0-for-13 and the only hitter reached on a hit-by-pitch. Short was just as impressive in the post-season, nailing down a a pair of saves (2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K) including the Ems clinching NWL title game. The 22-year-old should be the closer in South Bend and with a shortage of lefties in the organization, could make a fast rise to the majors, especially if he continues to dominate.
