2017 Draft

During the Cubs Convention, Cubs Amateur Scouting Director Matt Dorey said the depth of the 2017 draft was high school pitching and with the 27th and 30th pick, the North Siders could end up with a pair of prep arms. Jason McLeod, president of scouting and player development, said the plan was to stockpile pitchers and develop starters.

Prospect Talk

Director of Player Development Jaron Madison joined McLeod and Dorey on the minor league panel. Here’s some of the news from the panel. According to Dorey, Ian Happ wore down during the season but is working hard in the off-season on his conditioning. He’s also determined to remain at second base......Madison said RH Duane Underwood spent time in Arizona getting healthy and is ready for the 2017 season......McLeod said RH Dylan Cease will remain in the rotation and will start the year in South Bend.

Venezuelan Winter League

Lara took a 2-1 series lead with a 9-3 win over La Guaira. RH Jhondaniel Medina only needed nine pitches to retire the side in order in the sixth for Lara, stranding one inherited runner. Zulia downed Caribes 3-2 to grab a 2-1 series lead.

Dominican Winter League

Gigantes (8-8) won their third straight with a 10-6 win over Licey (7-9) to move into second place. Aguilas (12-4) downed Escogido 8-0. 3B Chesny Young (.281) was 2-for-4 with a triple for Escogido (5-11).

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Hermosillo scored twice in the bottom of the eighth and beat Mexicali 2-1 to cut the series lead to 2-1. Culiacan downed Los Mochis 4-1 to even the series at 2-2.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Santurce used a five-run seventh to beat Caguas 6-3 and tie the series at a game apiece.
