2016 Draft Class Update— Stephen Ridings, RHP
NSR caught up with Ridings and his coach at Haverford College after the Cubs used their 8th round pick to take the 6-foot-8, right-hander from the Division III school. Armed with a fastball in the mid-90s and only 90 college innings under his belt, Ridings signed for $120,000 but was placed on the DL and didn’t make his pro debut. The New York native participated in fall instructs and will likely be part of the rotation in Eugene. He’ll get a chance to develop three pitches as a starter but with his frame and the fastball, may be headed for the Cubs bullpen in the future.
Cahill signs with Padres
Former Cubs pitcher Trevor Cahill has signed a one-year , $1.75 million deal with San Diego. Cahill appeared in 50 games for the World Series champs, going 4-4 with a 2.74 ERA in 65.2 innings. He sported a WHIP of 1.28 and averaged 9.0 K/9. Cahill is expected to be a starter for the Padres as he had offers from Pirates, Blue Jays, Rangers, and Reds.
