2016 Draft Class Update— Duncan Robinson, RHP
Cubs have had such great success with pitchers from Dartmouth—Kyle Hendricks—they used their ninth round pick and a $30,000 signing bonus to get another. An All-Ivy first-team performer for three seasons, Robinson earned Ivy league Pitcher of the Year as a junior and went 4-6 with a 3.28 ERA in 68.2 innings as a senior. In four years at Dartmouth, he tied for fifth with 17 career wins, is ninth all-time with 174 strikeouts and his career 3.07 ERA is lowest in school history in over 40 years. Robinson made his pro debut in the Arizona Rookie League and after one game, was on his way to Eugene in mid-July. In seven games in the NWL, Robinson worked 19.1 innings, going 2-1 with a 4.19 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. He surrendered 24 hits and six walks with 17 strikeouts. Ems didn’t have any problems going to the right-hander in the playoffs as he tossed six innings without allowing an earned run. Robinson went four innings in Game 2 of the division series against Hillsboro to earning the save. In the deciding game of the NWL finals against Everett, he kept the AquaSox off the board for two innings, fanning one while allowing three hits. Robinson’s outings in his first pro season varied from one to four innings and the 23-year-old should be in the mix for one of the starting roles in South Bend or serve as a piggy back to gain innings. The Cubs will give Robinson a chance to make it as a starter before moving the 6-foot-6 Ivy leaguer to the pen. Robinson’s fastball sits at 88-92 but his best pitch is his breaking ball.
