2016 Draft Class Update— Trent Giambrone, IF
In a Cubs draft dominated by college pitching, the North Siders selected the Division II Defensive Player of the Year in the 25th round. Drafted by the Dodgers in the 30th round in 2012 out of Grace High School in Metairie, Louisiana, Giambrone’s college career began at Jones County Junior College in Mississippi. After hitting .385 with six homers and 29 steals as a sophomore, he earned a spot on the Delta State roster and made 36 starts his first season, hitting .294 with three homers. Giambrone excelled his senior year, not only as one of the nation’s top defenders but also with the bat, hitting .386/.433/.601 with nine homers, 52 RBI and 11 stolen bases. After the Cubs came calling, the infielder signed his contract on June 26 and was in Eugene’s starting lineup two days later. While he only committed one error at second in 28 starts, it was Giambrone’s bat that put him in the lineup for 51 games. The 23-year-old hit .292/.404/.433 in 171 at-bats that included a seven-game hitting streak and a 4-for-4 performance that was a triple shy of the cycle. He became more comfortable as the season progressed, helping the Ems to the best winning percentage in the minors while batting .333/.441/.538 in 23 games in August. In the Ems title run, Giambrone went 3-for-16 in five games with four walks. The Louisiana native should start the season in South Bend as one of the middle infielders and it will be interesting to see how his bat plays in the Midwest League in his first full season.
