2016 Draft Class Update— Nathan Sweeney, RHP
Cubs drafted 27 pitchers, seven from the high school ranks last June and the right-hander from Colorado was the only prep arm to ink a deal, signing for a reported $100,000. A Rawlings All-West First-Team Pre-season All-American, Sweeney had a scholarship offers to Arizona as well as one to San Jacinto Junior College. As a senior at Cherry Creek High School in Colorado, Sweeney was 1-3 with a 4.85 ERA in 21.2 innings and was a first-team 5A all-state pick after hitting .389 with four homers and 26 RBI, playing short and the outfield. Sporting a fastball in the low 90s, Sweeney made his pro debut in the Arizona Rookie League on Aug. 4 vs. Padres, allowing an unearned run in an inning of relief. The teenager struggled his next three trips to the hill, surrendering three hits, four walks and six earned runs over 2.1 frames. In his final outing of the year against the Diamondbacks, the 19-year-old recorded his first pro strikeout and completed his first outing without giving up a run, surrendering a hit in a scoreless inning. The 6-foot-4 right-hander participated in fall instructs and should be back in Mesa to start his first full pro season at extended spring training.
