2016 Draft Class Update—Delvin Zinn, IF
The Cubs drafted the two-sport star in the 28th round in 2015 but the Mississippi native decided to honor his scholarship to Mississippi State. During his amateur career, he was a Perfect Game honorable mention All-American and Southeast All-Region Second Team selection in 2015—hitting .346 with seven doubles, a home run, 17 RBI and stole nine bases as a senior at Pontotoc High School. Zinn left MSU and enrolled at Itawamba Junior College, batting .411/.464/.457 with 34 RBI and led the team with seven stolen bases. He earned Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges All-State honors while helping the Indians finish 27-20 and advance to the opening round of the MACJC playoffs. Eligible for the 2016 draft, the Cubs selected the slick-fielding infielder in the 23rd round. Zinn didn’t sign until July 15 and made his debut as a pinch-hitter on July 28 for Mesa in the Arizona Rookie League, grounding out to second. His first pro hit was a special one, singling off former Cy Young winner Zack Grienke of Arizona. Zinn appeared in 11 games, going 6-for-33 (.182) and participated in fall instructs. Zinn will turn 20 at the end of May and should find his way into a Eugene uniform by the end of the summer.
