Eloy gets invite to spring training

The Cubs top two prospects—Eloy Jimenez and Ian Happ—were among 24 Cubs minor leaguers that received spring training invites. Jimenez, the Cubs 2016 Minor  League Player of the Year, is now considered one of the top prospects in baseball and will be attending his first spring training on the MLB side of Sloan Park. Happ, the Cubs first-round pick in 2015, will also be attending his first big league camp.

Other prospects heading to spring training are IF Chesny Young,  RHP James Farris, RHP Ryan Williams, OF John Andreoli, OF Mark Zagunis, and C Taylor Davis

The Cubs have been busy re-stocking the minors. Those signed with invites to spring training include C Carlos Corporan, Ifs Chris Dominguez, Munenori Kawasaki, Jemile Weeks, RHPs Andury Acevedo, Maikel Cleto, Daniel Corcino, Seth Frankoff, Jim Henderson, Jhondaniel Medina, Conor Mullee, Fernando Rodriguez, and LHP Gerardo Concepcion and Zac Rosscup.

Cubs sign Kelly, Parra

The Cubs added two more pitchers on Friday to bolster their minor league pitching depth at the upper levels.

Casey Kelly, once traded by Boston with Anthony Rizzo to San Diego for Adrian Gonzalez, agreed to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. Kelly made his pro debut in 2012 for the Padres as a starter and went 2-3 with a 6.21 ERA in six starts. Tommy John surgery sidelined his career and he returned to the bigs in 2015, spending most of the season in the minors before making three appearances at the end of the year for the Padres. After becoming a free agent, he signed with the Braves and appeared in 10 games with Atlanta before going on the Dl at the end of July and not pitching again. He had some success in AAA, tossing 16.1 scoreless frames over three starts, including eight shutout frames in one start. Kelly features a sinking fastball in the low 90s as well as a change up and curve. Considered one of the top right-handed pitching prospects back in 2011, the right-hander was a former first-round pick of the Red Sox when you know who was running the show.

The Cubs also resigned left-hander Manny Parra to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. Parra was a spring training invite last year and signed a minor league deal with the Cubs but never pitched as he recovered from a shoulder injury he suffered in 2015 with the Reds. A starter early in his career with Milwaukee, Parra moved to the bullpen and spent three years in Cincinnati’s pen, logging 116 innings in 150 games as a lefty specialist.
