Cubs fall after holding 7-1 lead
The North Siders saw the A’s score four runs in the sixth and add four more in the seventh as Oakland downed Chicago 9-8 at Hohokam Stadium.
Jake Arrieta made his second start and didn’t allow a hit over three innings. The A’s were able to score once after a walk and a sac fly. Arrieta fanned five. Koji Uehara and Justin Grimm both tossed a scoreless frame. RH Williams Perez made his Cubs debut and surrendered four runs on three hits and a walk. Three of the runs scored on a homer. Rob Zastryzny took the loss as the lefty was unable to retire any of the six hitters he faced, yielding three runs on three hits and three walks. Michael Wagner got the final three outs of the sixth, allowing one of the three inherited runners to score. James Pugliese, who’s had a solid spring and could start the year at Iowa, tossed a scoreless ninth.
Kris Bryant smacked his second homer of the spring and went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo each knocked in two runs. Cubs prospects seeing playing time were 3B Jeimer Candelario (0-for-3, .286), 2B Ian Happ (1-2, .407), SS Chesny Young (2-2, .308), RF Eloy Jimenez (0-2, .346), C Victor Caratini (0-1, .313), DH Taylor Davis (0-1, BB, .333), and CF Jacob Hannemann (1-1, R, BB, 2 SB, .304).
USA advances in WBC
Team USA roughed up former Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster in the first inning for three runs and went on to beat Team Canada 8-0 and advance to the second round of the WBC.......The Dominican Republic finished pool play at 3-0 as they scored seven runs in the top of the 11th and beat Columbia (1-2) 10-3.......Cubs prospect John Andreoli hit his second homer of the WBC but it wasn’t enough as Puerto Rico (3-0) blitzed Italy (1-2) 9-3. Javier Baez went 2-for-5 with a RBI and batted .357 during round one.......Japan scored twice in the top of the 11th and beat Netherlands 8-6 in a second round game in Pool E.....Mexico (1-2) earned it first win with a 11-9 victory over Venezuela. Despite the win, Venezuela and Italy play today to decide the final team for Pool F in the second round........The Netherlands handed Israel its first loss of the tournament with a 12-2 win in Pool E play.
