Cubs shutout the Dodgers and the Dominican Republic beat Venezuela in the WBC.

Cubs blank Dodgers 4-0

Five Cubs pitchers held the Dodgers to three hits and combined to toss the first spring training shutout. Eddie Butler, acquired from the Rockies during the off-season, got the start and tossed four frames, allowing just one hit while fanning four. RH Justin Grimm, LH David Rollins and RH Jim Henderson all threw a scoreless frame. Rule 5 pick-up Caleb Smith gave up two hits over the final two innings but kept the Dodgers off the board, fanning two while walking one, earning the save.

Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI single from Matt Szczur and made it 2-0 in the eighth on a RBI double from Bijan Rademacher. Chris Dominguez and Jacob Hannemann added RBI doubles in the ninth. Plenty of prospects saw action in this one—C Taylor Davis(1-for-2, R), CF Albert Almora (1-3, R), CF Jacob Hannemann (1-1, 2B, RBI, BB), 1B Jeimer Candelario (0-5), RF Bijan Rademacher (1-1, 2B, RBI), 2B Ian Happ (1-2, 2 BB), LF John Andreoli (0-4), C Victor Caratini(0-2, BB), 3B Jason Vosler (0-1), SS Chesny Young (1-1, R).

Cubs (7-9-4) send Duane Underwood to the mound on Friday as they return to Camelback to face the White Sox.

World Baseball Classic

This tourney is a bunch of fun. If you think it interrupts spring training, then you’re not watching and learning. You want to know why these guys play baseball, its all on display, they love the game. Some countries more than others……..The Dominican Republic (1-1) stayed in the hunt to repeat as champions with a 3-0 win over Venezuela (0-2). Gregory Polanco (Pirates)  put the DR up 1-0 with solo homer the fifth and Nelson Cruz added a solo bomb in the eighth. Cubs minor leaguer Jhondaniel Medina retired the only hitter he faced in his WBC debut for Venezuela…….Team USA faces Puerto Rico on Friday night in San Diego.
