Minor league reports are back. Spent the weekend moving into my minor league bunker for the 2017 season. The Cubs will be announcing the official rosters for Iowa, Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend, hopefully sometime on Monday, and I’ll have previews when those are released. Will also be unveiling the Top 50 Cubs prospects so stay tuned for that list with analysis. The minor league season begins Thursday, April 6, and NSR will be starting their daily updates with game analysis, pitching updates, and all the moves and news in the minors. So let’s go and good luck to all the Cubs minor leaguers.
Meza loaned to Yucatan
Singed as a minor league free agent during the off-season, the Cubs have loaned right-handed pitcher Mario Meza to Yucatan in the Mexican League. The 26-year-old was a member of Team Mexico during the WBC and led the Mexican League in holds last year in 53 games for Yucatan. Meza appeared in two spring training games for the Cubs, tossing 1.1 scoreless frames.
Cubs sign teen from Mexico
Cubs have signed 19-year-old outfielder Alonso Gaitan to a minor league deal. The right-handed hitting native of Mexico stands six-feet and weighs 176 pounds. Gaitan was on the roster for Tijuana in the Mexican League last year but didn’t play in a game.
Martinez added to minors
Osvaldo Martinez has signed a minor league deal with the Cubs. The 28-year-old shortstop will likely report to Iowa and fill the shoes left by the loss of Munenori Kawasaki. The Marlins 11th round pick in 2006, the Puerto Rican native made a quick rise through Florida’s system and made his MLB debut in 2010, playing in 14 games. He appeared in 20 games for the Marlins in 2011 and has been in the minors ever since, playing in the White Sox, Dodgers, Braves and Orioles systems. Appearing in 39 games for Carolina in the Puerto Rican League last winter, Martinez hit .248/.308/.338 with a homer and nine RBI.
A couple of ex-Cubs have signed deals. IF Munenori Kawasaki will head back to Japan after signing a deal with Softbank. Former outfielder Chris Coghlan has agreed to a minor league contract with the Blue Jays.
