Right-hander Eddie Butler shined on opening night as Iowa edged Oklahoma City. Trent Giambrone and Daniel Spingola homered in Myrtle Beach’s win while Tennessee only managed four hits in their opening night loss. South Bend was rained out and will play a DH on Friday.

Victor Caratini scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth and five Cubs pitchers combined to blank the Dodgers.
Hitting Recap: Cubs were held to five hits and scored the only run of the game in the ninth. C Victor Caratini singled with one out and took third on a two-out single from Bijan Rademacher. With Todd Glaesmann hitting, Caratini scored on a wild pitch. Ian Happ singled in his first AAA at-bat and finished the night 1-for-3 with a walk. Caratini went 2-for-4.
Pitching Chart: Eddie Butler was solid in his Cubs debut, fanning six over 5.2 scoreless innings. The right-hander threw 88 pitches, 54 for strikes, and allowed six hits and two walks for a game score of 64…… ylan Floro got the final out of the sixth, stranding an inherited runner……Left-hander Brian Duensing worked a 1-2-3 seventh in his Cubs debut and Pierce Johnson (1-0) struckout the side in the eighth…..Felix Pena got the save but it wasn’t easy. The Dodgers loaded the base with one out and Pena got a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
I-Cubs Notes: Alec Mills, acquired from the Royal during the off-season, makes his Cubs debut on Friday night in Oklahoma City.
Southern League—AA—Pensacola (Reds) 4, Tennessee 1
Pensacola pitching held the Smokies to just four hits as Tennessee lost its season opener.
Hitting Recap: Smokies only run of the night tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth. Jeffrey Baez reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on Trey Martin’s single to right field. Charcer Burks, Ian Rice and Baez all singled.
Pitching Chart: Right-hander Zach Hedges was greeted with three straight singles that plated a run in the first but the Wahoos wouldn’t get any more in the first. Hedges would retire nine straight before a one-out solo homer in the fifth and finished the night with a line of 5 P, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3K, game score 49, 55-pitches, 38 for strikes, six groundouts……Jhondaniel Medina made his Cubs debut and worked a 1-2-3 sixth with one strikeout in the 16-pitch outing…..Gerardo Concepcion didn’t make it out of the seventh, issuing two walks, one eventually scoring…..Daniel Corcino allowed one of the two inherited runners to score in the seventh and then surrendered a solo homer in the eighth in his Cubs debut.
Smokies News: Jen-Ho Tseng get the start on Friday night at Pensacola. Tseng made 22 starts lat yer for the Smokies, going 6-8 with a 4.29 ERA.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 4, Lynchburg (Indians) 2
Hitting Recap: DH Trent Giambrone gave the Pelicans a 2-0 lead in the second and LF Daniel Spingola followed with a solo shot for a 3-0 lead in the second. Eddy Martinez, who finished the night 3-for-4 with a run, added a RBI infield single in the seventh. Spingola ended the night 2-for-4 and SS Bryant Flete added two singles and stole a base.
Pitching Chart: Making his Carolina League debut and working five innings, Adbert Alzolay (1-0) held Lynchburg to three hits but two of those left the park, surrendering solo homers in the third and fourth. The right-hander walked two and fanned five in the 80-pitch outing for a game score of 47…..Right-hander Casey Bloomquist only needed 15 pitches in a scoreless sixth, his only inning.…..Making his first appearance since an injury ended his season last July, left-hander Jordan Minch fanned the first two hitters he faced, and after a walk, recorded the third punchout of the frame. Minch started the eighth but only got one out, leaving after a walk and a single……RH Scott Effross slammed the door with a pair of strikeouts in the eighth and then worked a 1-2-3 ninth with two more punchouts for the save.
Pelicans News: The Pelicans have placed 3B Adonis Paula and LHP Ryan Kellogg on the DL to start the season….The Cubs third-round pick last June, Thomas Hatch will make his professional debut on Friday night at Lynchburg. Justin Steele is scheduled to go on Saturday and Oscar De La Cruz on Sunday,
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend @West Michigan (Tigers)—Rained Out.
Rain and cold weather canceled the season opener at West Michigan and the two teams will play a twin-bill on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. Two seven innings games will be played. Duncan Robinson and Tyson Miller are scheduled to start for the Cubs.
