Cubs built a 10-4 lead and hung on in the ninth to improve to 3-0.
Hitting Recap: Jeimer Candelario homered in the first innins for the second straight night, a thee-run bomb, and added a two-run double in the fifth, finishing the game with his second straight five RBI contest. 2B Ian Happ homered for the second straight night, hitting an opposite field two-run blast in the third, and later walked and scored. Osvaldo Martinez went 2-for-4 in his Cubs debut while CF John Andreoli went 3-for-4 with a triple, stolen base, RBI and three runs scored.
Pitching Chart: Aaron Brooks returned to the mound after missing most of 2016 with a hip contusion and recorded the win. The right-hander worked five innings, throwing 75 pitches, 51 for strikes, allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks. He fanned five, gave up a homer, recorded seven ground ball outs and had a game score of 43. Jack Leathersich fanned two in a scoreless sixth. Seth Frankoff made his Cubs debut, allowing a solo homer in his two innings, striking out three. Jose Rosario started the ninth but didn’t retire any of the five hitters he faced, issuing two walks and three hits, two leaving the park. David Rollins made his Cubs debut, getting an out on a sacrifice bunt and then Happ caught a line drive and doubled up the runner to end the game.
I-Cubs Notes: RH Jake Buchanan gets the start on Sunday afternoon in Oklahoma City…..The I-Cubs have extended their lease agreement with the City of Des Moines through 2037 and extended their marketing agreement with Principal Financial group so the home of the I-Cubs will remain Principal Park for the next 10 years. Iowa’s agreement with the Cubs runs through 2020 and is the third longest active affiliation among minor league teams that are not owned by a major league team.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee 9, Pensacola (Reds) 2
Trevor Clifton won his AA debut and Tennessee (2-1) scored five times in the fifth to beat Pensacola (1-2) for their second straight night.
Hitting Recap: Smokies pounded Wahoos pitching for 14 hits with David Bote going 3-for-5 with a RBI. 1B Yasiel Balaguert and SS Andrew Ely both had two hits and two RBI. Cael Brockmeyer added two hits and scored twice. Clifton delivered a RBI single in his first pro at-bat in the second to give Smokies a 3-2 lead.
Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton gave up a two-run homer in the first but that would be all, retiring the next 13 hitters before a single in the fifth. Clifton threw 75 pitches, 49 for strikes, and allowed two hits and a walk while fanning four. He had a game score of 56. David Berg worked a 1-2-3 sixth, retiring all three hitters on ground outs. Daury Torrez fanned two over two shutout frames and Gerardo Concepcion tossed a scoreless ninth.
Smokies News: Preston Morrison makes his Southern League debut on Sunday evening in Pensacola…..RF Jeffrey Baez ended Saturday night’s game throwing out a runner at second. It was his third assist in as many nights.
Carolina League—High A—Lynchburg (Indians) 6, Myrtle Beach 1
Lynchburg (1-2) pitching held the Pelicans to five hits and handed Myrtle Beach (2-1) their first loss.
Pitching Chart: Hoping to rebound from a rough 2016, LH Justin Steele made his Carolina League debut on Saturday night. The lefty blanked the Hillcats the first two frames but ran into problems in the third, giving up three runs on three singles, a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a throwing error. Steele gave up leadoff walk in the fifth and that runner came around to score as he finished the night with a line of 4 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 1 K, game score 35, 77 pitches..…RH Pedro Araujo allowed an inherited runner to score and got charged with another run in his 2.2 innings of relief. RH Dillon Maples recorded two outs but not before allowing an inherited runner to score and another run to come across on three walks and two hits. LH Tommy Thorpe stranded the bases loaded, recording the final two outs of the eighth.
Pelicans News: Oscar De La Cruz takes the hill on Sunday afternoon in his Carolina League debut…..RHP Jeremy Null has been placed on the temporary inactive list and LHP John Williamson has been assigned to Myrtle Beach from extended spring training.
Midwest League—Low A—West Michigan (Tigers) 2, South Bend 0
South Bend saw it scoreless innings streak reach 31 innings as there were shutout for the third straight game.
Hitting Recap: Only four hits for the Cubs, singles from Luis Ayala, Wladimir Galindo, Alberto Mineo and Vimael Machin. The Cubs loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but a strikeout and a pop out ended the threat.
Pitching Chart: Right-hander Dylan Cease made his Midwest League debut and fanned eight over four innings before leaving after 77 pitches. Cease’s fastball was in the mid-90s but he had some issues with command, walking three, and allowing three hits, one a solo homer. Game score 51. Matt Swarmer tossed the final five frames, only allowing one run while fanning three and surrendering four hits. The lone run scored in the fifth when right fielder Luis Ayala lost a fly ball and it went for a triple. A sac fly scored the run, Swarmer, the Cubs 19th round pick last June, threw 68 pitches, 47 for strikes.
SB-Cubs News: Northwest Leaguer Pitcher of the Year last year, Manuel Rondon takes the mound on Sunday in South Bend for his MWL debut…….South Bend has placed RHP Michael Rucker on the DL and RHP Michael Knighton has been assigned from extended spring training.
