Pacific Coast League—AAA—Oklahoma City (Dodgers) 5, Iowa 2
After dropping the first three games of the series, Oklahoma City (2-3) downed the I-Cubs (3-2) for the second straight game.
Hitting Recap: Only five hits for the I-Cubs. 1B Victor Caratini scored on a wild pitch in the second for a 1-0 lead and then walked and scored on a single from Osvaldo Martinez in the fourth to give Iowa a 2-1 advantage. LF Ian Happ (.211) went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams made his season debut and his first appearance since last May. The right-hander threw 81 pitches over 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk. He fanned four and had a game score of 47. Jose Rosario was back on the mound after not retiring a batter in his last outing. The right-hander walked the first hitter but got a fly out to end the fifth. Brian Duensing was impressive in his second rehab stint, fanning five over two scoreless frames. Duensing worked a 1-2-3 relief inning in his first appearance. RH Pierce Johnson surrendered a leadoff walk and a homer in the ninth. The former first-round sandwich pick in 2012 has been moved to the bullpen after spending his first five years as a starter.
I-Cubs Notes: The I-Cubs head to Des Moines for the home opener on Tuesday night and send Eddie Butler to the mound against New Orleans.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee, Pensacola (Reds) 3, Tennessee 2
Pensacola (3-2) strung together four singles in the bottom of the seventh and scored the eventual winning run to take the series from Tennessee (2-3)
Hitting Recap: Only four hits for the Smokies. They grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first as Charcer Burks singled and eventually scored on a RBI single from Yasiel Balaguert. Smokies took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when pitcher Duane Underwood singled, and after a walk to Burks and a sacrifice bunt from Andrew Ely, scored on a ground out off the bat of David Bote.
Pitching Chart: Making his season debut, right-hander Duane Underwood fanned eight over five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. He threw 75 pitches, 51 for strikes, and had a game score of 62. Good outing for the 22-year-old as he missed a good portion of last year with an injury…..RH David Berg worked his second scoreless frame of the season…..RH James Pugliese gave up four singles in the seventh as the Wahoos scored the go-ahead run…..RH Jhondaniel Medina tossed a scoreless eighth in his second appearance.
Smokies News: Smokies have Tuesday off and host Mississippi on Wednesday in the home opener. A starter has yet to be named.
Carolina League—High A—Buies Creek (Astros) 3, Myrtle Beach 2
Pelicans (3-2) were held to two hits as Buies Creek (5-0) took the series opener.
Hitting Recap: Pelicans took a 1-0 lead in the first with a pair of two out walks, a fielding error and a wild pitch that allowed Trent Giambrone to score. Myrtle Beach grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the fourth when Tyler Pearson reached on an error, took second on a walk and scored on a throwing error by the second baseman. 3B Jesse Hodges doubled and P.J. Higgins added a single.
Pitching Chart: Casey Bloomquist only needed 68 pitches to get through five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and no walks. The right-hander fanned five and recorded nine ground ball outs. Bloomquist worked as starter and out of the bullpen for South Bend last year and has moved into the rotation…LH Jordan Minch tossed 1.2 scoreless frames in his second outing and Craig Brooks recorded the final four outs without allowing a run.
Pelicans News: RH Adbert Alzolay (1-0, 3.60 ERA) makes his second start of the year on Tuesday at Buies Creek.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, Fort Wayne (Padres) 3
Hitting Recap: Chris Pieters smacked a solo homer in the second and Darryl Wilson added a solo shot of his own in the third as the Cubs grabbed an early 4-0 lead and hung on. SS Isaac Paredes collected his second straight three-hit game with three singles and two runs scored. C Alberto Mineo added a RBI triple and finished 2-for-4.
Pitching Chart: Erling Moreno only lasted three innings in his MWL debut, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk. The right-handed Columbian fanned two, hit two batters and threw 67 pitches, 41 for strikes. Game score 37…..RH Dakota Mekkes was impressive in relief, fanning five over three no-hit innings, issuing just one walk, and earning the win…LH Marc Huberman fanned two over two scoreless innings and Chad Hockin worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first pro save.
