Erick Castillo’s walk-off single gave Tennessee a win while Jose Paulino (South Bend) and Williams Perez (Iowa) made their season debuts.

Cubs affiliates went 1-4 on Saturday night as Erick Castillo’s walk-off single provided the win for Tennessee.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock (Rangers) 7, Iowa 6

Round Rock (5-5) scored four times in the fifth and hung on to take the series opener over Iowa (5-5).

Hitting Recap: Iowa took a 2-0 lead in the first as 3B Jeimer Candelario (.343) knocked in his PCL best 17th run with his seventh double, also tops in the league. LF Mark Zagunis (.097) added a RBI ground out in the second. After the Express tied the game at 2-2, CF John Andreoli (.257) delivered a two-run double in the fourth. Iowa rallied in the ninth but came up short. The Cubs loaded the bases with no outs but after two outs, C Victor Caratini(.250) singled to center scoring two runs. Taylor Davis (.179) grounded out to end the game. 2B Chesny Young (.229) went 3-for-4 with two runs and DH Ian Happ (.293) added two singles and walked once.

Pitching Chart: Williams Perez made his Cubs debut and went five innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits and two walks. Signed as a free agent during the lat season, the former Braves starter fanned five and threw 80 pitches for a game score of 33……Zac Rosscup made his first appearance since missing last year after shoulder surgery. The left-hander gave up solo homer over two frames, one of three hits he allowed. Rosscup  fanned two and thew 25 pitches…..LH David Rollins tossed a pair of scoreless frames, retiring all six hitters he faced on 24 pitches, 19 for strikes.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa has placed RHP Alec Mills on the 7-day disabled list with a left ankle contusion. LHP Zac Rosscup has been activated from the DL…..A starter has not been named for Sunday’s game with Round Rock.

Southern League—AA—Game 1—Tennessee 3, Mississippi (Braves) 2; Game 2—Tennessee, Mississippi

Smokies (4-6) won on Erick Castillo’s walk-off single in the opener but the Braves (6-4) got revenge in the night-cap.

Hitting Recap: Game 1—Jeffery Baez launched a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to tie and game and Erick Castillo delivered the walk-off single in the ninth for the win. In the ninth, Cael Brockmeyer reached on a force out and advanced to second after a walk to Baez. Pinch-hitter Erick Castillo took the first pitch he saw to right field to score Brockmeyer and give the Smokies the win. Only six hits for the Tennessee, two from Charcer Burks.; Game 2—Smokies held to three hits and they scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer from Jason Vosler, his first. Burks (.308) went 1-for-3.

Pitching Chart: Game 1Preston Morrison was tough the first five frames, blanking the Braves on four hits and no walks. In the sixth, Morrison surrendered two solo homers and ended his night with a line of 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K. He recorded 10 ground ball outs and had a game score of 46 in the 82-pitch outing. RH James Pugliese tossed 1.1 scoreless frames and RH Daury Torrez earned the win with two shutout innings of relief.; Game 2—RH Duane Underwood (0-1, 4.50 ERA) made his second start, surrendering three runs on five hits and a walk over five innings. Underwood fanned three in the 67-pitch outing for a game score of 52. Stephen Perakslis and David Berg both tossed a scoreless inning.

Smokies News: Tennessee has Sunday off and are back in action on Monday night as the host Birmingham (White Sox) for the first of a five-game series.

Carolina League—High A—Lynchburg (Indians) 5, Myrtle Beach 3

Myrtle Beach (5-5) dropped their second straight home game to the Hillcats (4-6).

Hitting Recap: 3B Jesse Hodges (.172) delivered a RBI single in the first and a two-run double in the ninth but that would be all the offense the Pelicans would get. Bryant Flete (.318) went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored but his extra base hit actually left the park and bounced back onto the field but the umpire didn’t see it. 

Pitching Chart: Casey Bloomquist (0-2, 5.40 ERA) surrendered a run in the first and they added two more in the fourth to take the loss. Bloomquist allowed seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts in the 70-pitch outing. Dillon Maples fanned three over two frames but allowed a solo homer. Pedro Araujo went two frames, yielding a run  on one hit and a walk to go along with five strikeouts. James Norwood worked around two walks in a scoreless ninth. Pelicans pitchers fanned 14 on the night.

Pelicans News: Adbert Alzolay (1-0, 4.82 ERA) makes his third start on Sunday against Lynchburg.

Midwest League—Low A—West Michigan (Tigers) 6, South Bend 5

West Michigan pushed across a run in the bottom of the eight to beat South Bend and take the series. 

Hitting Recap: South Bend scored three times in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5. LF Kevonte Mitchell (.194) led off the sixth with solo homer, his first, and finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. 2B Zack Short (.258) ripped a RBI single and a ground out by SS Isaac Paredes (.270) plated the tying run. Cubs had 12 hits in the game, two each from Short, C Alberto Mineo (.296), 1B Vimael Machin (.313), DH Yeiler Peguero (.343) and Luis Ayala (.270). 

Pitching Chart: Jose Paulino made his season debut on Saturday at West Michigan, throwing 56 pitches over four innings. The lefty was charged with three runs, only one earned, on five hits and two walks. Paulino fanned one and had a game score of 42. RH Michael Knighton gave up two runs in the fifth and worked a scoreless sixth, allowing three hits and two walks in his 35-pitch outing. After blanking the Whitecaps in the seventh, Pedro Silverio  (1-1, 1.08 ERA) gave up a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth that gave West Michigan the win.

SB-Cubs News: Team has Sunday off and are back in action on Monday as they host Great Lakes (Dodgers). RH Tyson Miller (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to get the start.…..South Bend has placed RHP Erling Moreno on the disabled list and LHP Jose Paulino has been assigned to South Bend.
