Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock (Rangers) 10, Iowa 9
Round Rock (6-6) came out on top in the slugfest with Iowa (6-6) and took the series.
Hitting Recap: Iowa hit three homers, including a grand slam from 1B Victor Caratini (.268) but it wasn’t enough. Caratini blast, his first of the season, tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh. 3B Jeimer Candelario (.326) smacked a solo homer in the fourth and LF Mark Zagunis (.114) followed with a two-run bast. Candelario finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBI and Caratini knocked in five. SS Chesny Young (.279) went 3-for-5 and is 7-for-his-last 12. 2B Ian Happ (.286) was 0-for-4.
Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams got in trouble in the first with a leadoff single and a RBI double. The Express added two RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Williams fanned the side but threw 39 pitches and it would be the only inning he would work. Rough day for the bullpen. RH Miguel Mejia gave up two solo homers in his season debut over two innings and Dylan Floro got charged with three runs in 2.2 frames. LH Jack Leathersich only got two outs, walked five and allowed one run. RH Felix Pena worked out of a bases loaded jam, stranding all three runners and tossed 1.2 scoreless frames to run his scoreless streak to 5.2 innings over three games. LH David Rollins took the loss, surrendering the winning run the ninth on a two-out double.
I-Cubs Notes: Iowa heads to New Orleans for a four-game series but a starter for Tuesday night hasn’t been named.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee 6, Birmingham (White Sox) 0
Zach Hedges and three relievers combined to blank Birmingham in the series opener.
Hitting Recap: Five straight hits in the second gave the Smokies a 4-0 lead. With two outs, 3B Jason Vosler (.167) doubled and scored on triple from SS Carlos Penalver (.160). LF Roberto Caro (.154) followed with a RBI single and scored on a double by CF Charcer Burks (.318). Burks stole third and cam home on single off the bat of RF Jeffrey Baez (.237). Smokies added two unearned runs in the eighth with a pair of walks and a single to left that got by the outfielder and allowed both runs to score and Vosler to reach third. Burks, Baez, Vosler and Penalver all finished with two hits.
Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (1-2, 3.45 ERA) scattered seven hits and a walk over 5.2 innings, recording the win in the 84-pitch outing. Hedges retired the side in the fourth but the Barons had runners on every other inning and after a pair of singles in the sixth, knocked the right-hander out of the game. He fanned two, got seven ground ball outs and had a game score of 60……Rh Brad Markey stranded two inherited runners and got the final out of the sixth, and worked around a hit and a walk in the seventh. Ryan McNeil and Stephen Perakslis both pitched a scoreless frame.

Carolina League—High A—Buies Creek (Astros) 4, Myrtle Beach 2
Rough night for Myrtle Beach (5-7) as they lost their third straight and two players left with injuries.
Hitting Recap: RF Eddy Martinez (.175) ripped a two-out single in the first to tie the game, scoring C P.J. Higgins (.289), who doubled with two outs. DH Trent Giambrone (.293) launched his second homer over the left field wall in the third to give the Pelicans a 2-1 lead. LF Daniel Spingola (.333) went 2-for-3 and Higgins had two hits.
Pitching Chart: Making his home debut, Thomas Hatch (0-2, 4.40 ERA) gave up a walk, a stolen base and a RBI single with two outs in the first but kept the Astros off the board the next three frames. In the fifth, two walks and a single loaded the bases and on a fly ball to right fielder Eddy Martinez, the throw home was close but the runner was called safe. C P.J. Higgins was hurt on the play and had to leave the game. Another single made in 3-2 and then Hatch was hit in the head by a 100 mph line drive off the bat of Astros prospect Kyle Tucker and left the game. He did walk off the field under his own power. Hatch finished with a line of 4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, He threw 82 pitches, 49 strikes, recorded six ground ball outs, and had a game score of 41……RH Craig Brooks got the final out of the fifth and aded two more no-hit innings, only allowing a walk with three punchouts in the 35-pitch outing. Brooks has not allowed a run in 9.2 innings and fanned 14. James Norwood (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 6 IP) worked around three hits and a walk over the final two frames.

Midwest League—Low A—Great Lakes (Dodgers) 5, South Bend 4
Great Lakes (4-7) scored three times in the top of the fourth and took the series opener at South Bend (5-6).
Hitting Recap: 3B Zack Short (.257) led off the first with a homer, his first of the season and second as a pro. South Bend took a 3-0 lead in the second on a triple by CF Darryl Wilson (.200), plating 2B Yeiler Peguero (.359), who reached on a single. Wilson then scored on a balk. South Bend wouldn’t get back on the board until the eighth when 1B Wladimir Galindo (.286) doubled and scored on another two-bagger by Peguero. Galindo finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
Pitching Chart: RH Tyson Miller (0-1, 2.45 ERA) got though the first two frames but a triple and a throwing error plated a run in the third. Miller surrendered three runs in the fourth, two coming on a homer. The Loons opened the inning with three straight singles but a 5-4-3 double play limited the damage before the homer. The Cubs fourth-round pick lsat June worked a 1-2-3 fifth and finished with a line of 5 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. He threw 84 pitches, 52 for strikes, and had a game score of 39…..RH Kyle Miller made his first relief appearance, allowing a hit and a walk over two innings. RH Chad Hockin pitched the final two frames, getting charged with an unearned run on a hit and two walks to go along with three punchouts.
