Three Baby Cakes pitchers held Iowa to four hits and combined for the shutout to take the series opener.
Pitching Chart: Aaron Brooks (2-1, 4.80 ERA) gave up five runs on nine hits and two walks in his third start, suffering his first loss. Brooks fanned one and had game score of 34, throwing 86 pitches. Zac Rosscup yielded two runs on three hits over 1.1 frames. Tuesday’s matinee was cancelled and will be made up as part of the doubleheader on Thursday. Jen-Ho Tseng is scheduled to start on Wednesday night with Trevor Clifton and Preston Morrison (0-0, 1.69 ERA) pitching the twin-bill.
Smokies News: The Smokies have placed OF Trey Martin on the 7-day disabled list and activated RHP Stephen Perakslis from the inactive list…..While outfielder Jacob Hannemann is listed on the Smokies roster, he’s currently rehabbing an injury in Mesa at extended spring training. With Martin going on the DL, he may be in Tennessee soon.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 6, Buies Creek (Astros) 0
Hitting Recap: After six scoreless, the Pelicans got on the board in the seventh when Eddy Martinez lined his first homer over the left field wall for a 2-0 lead. Trent Giambrone struckout but reached on a wild pitch. Pelicans added four more in the eighth as a ground out by Carlos Sepulveda and a RBI single from Connor Myers platted the first two runs. A dropped pop up with the bases loaded scored two more before the inning was over. Pelicans only had five hits and only one over the first six innings as Alex Winkleman fanned 10 and shut Myrtle Beach down.
Pitching Chart: Three Myrtle Beach arms combined for 10 punchouts and tossed the Pelicans second shutout of the season. LH Justin Steele continues to find success in the Carolina League, working 5.1 innings and lowering his ERA to 0.63. The left-hander had his fastball working from 91-94 and kept hitters off balance with good breaking ball. Steele recorded five punchouts, recorded five ground ball outs, threw 93 pitches (63 for strikes), and had a game sore of 63….. Dillon Maples was sporting fastball in the mid 90s and a good breaking ball during his 1.2 frames. Maples stranded two inherited runners in the sixth and worked a scoreless seventh. The first two hitters of the eighth both walked to end his outing. Scott Effross stranded both of those runners with a double play and a strikeout and pitched the ninth to preserve the shutout.
Pelicans News: RH Oscar De La Cruz gets the start on Wednesday night in the series finale against Buies Creek. News is good on both P.J. Higgins and Thomas Hatch. According to Pelicans playby-play announcer Scott Kornberg, Higgins, who hurt his knee on Monday night, has a sore knee but will be fine. Thomas Hatch is also fine after taking aline drive off the head. Hatch has no concussion symptoms and is “totally okay.”
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 9, Great Lakes (Dodgers) 6
Hitting Recap: Yeiler Peguero slugged his first homer and added two doubles, scored twice and plated three runs while 3B Wladimir Galindo added his first long ball and two singles, scored twice and knocked din three. Zack Short aded a pair of single sand scored twice while Kevonte Mitchell went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Cubs took a 4-0 lead in the first on two-run homers by Peguero and Galindo and added four more in the seventh, two scoring on Mitchell’s single.
Pitching Chart: Duncan Robinson earned the win, working 5.1 innings in the 86-pitch outing. The right-hander allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits on two walks. Game score 45. Dakota Mekkes earned his second hold, retiring all five hitters he faced while stranding one inherited runner. Wyatt Short fanned the side in the eighth. Michael Knighton issued three walks and pair of hits that led to three runs before getting the final out in the ninth.
