Ian Happ homers and the Cubs Class A teams fly the “W”

Here’s a look at action around the Cubs affiliates from Friday night including wins from Iowa, South Bend and Myrtle Beach.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 4, New Orleans (Marlins) 3

Stephen Bruno’s RBI single in the top of the ninth gave Iowa the win over New Orleans.

Hitting Recap: Tied at 3-3, Mark Zagunis led off the ninth with a walk and after a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Davis, scored on Stephen Bruno’s single to center. Zagunis gave Iowa a 1-0 lead in the third with a RBI single, scoring Jeimer Candelario, who led off the frame with a double, his 8th. David added a sacrifice fly. Cubs made it 3-1 in the sixth on Ian Happ’s seventh homer of the year, his first from the right-side of the plate. 

Pitching Chart: Eddie Butler scattered eight hits over six solid innings, allowing one run with one walk and one strikeout. Butler got nine fly ball outs and threw 93-pitches for a game score of 56. Dylan Floro got charged with a blown save and got the win, allowing two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Felix Pena pitched the ninth for his second save.

I-Cubs Notes: No starter has been named for Saturday.

Southern League—AA—Birmingham (White Sox) 4, Tennessee 3

Birmingham (4-11) used a three-run fourth and hung on in the ninth to beat Tennessee (8-7)

Hitting Recap: Seeing his first action of the season, CF Jacob Hannemann didn’t wait long to get into the act, ripping a double to lead off the fourth and scoring on a single from David Bote. Hannemann finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base. The Smokies scored twice in the ninth on a RBI single from Andrew Ely and a Carlos Penalver single to cut the lead to one run. They had the tying run on third with one out, but couldn’t score as Charcer Burks and Bote were retired.

Pitching Chart: It was Preston Morrison that got the start on Friday night, not Duane Underwood. Morrison was scheduled to go in game two of Thursday’s twin-bill but Daniel Corcino got the start instead. Making his third start, the TCU product breezed through the first to frames with a pair of singles scored a run in the third. Morrison surrendered three runs in the fourth, two coming an a homer. He ended the night with a line of 5 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 B. 5 K, game score 43. Smokies bullpen kept the Barons off the board—RH Stephen Perakslis (2 IP, 4 K), RH Ryan McNeil (1 IP 3 K), and RH Daury Torrez (1 IP).

Smokies News: A starter had not been named for Saturday.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 6, Down East (Rangers) 3

Myrtle Beach used a three-run seventh to beat Down East for the second straight night. 

Hitting Recap: 3B Jesse Hodges had three hits and plated a pair of runs to lead the offense, that collected 11 hits. DH Matt Rose went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Daniel Spingola delivered a pinch-hit two-run double in the ninth. C Tyler Pearson and LF Robert Garcia knocked in runs.

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay may not be getting the national recognition but within the Cubs organization, the top brass has their eye on the 22-year-old Venezuelan. Alzolay fanned seven over five innings, getting charged with an unearned run in the fifth. The right-hander threw 81 pitches, 58 for strikes, and had a game score of 62. Dillon Maples (3-0, 2.25 ERA) continues to impress in High A as the right-hander fanned four over two scoreless frames and earned the win. Scott Effross surrendered two runs on two hits and two walks in the eighth while Pedro Araujo worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.

Pelicans News: RH Thomas Hatch (0-2, 4.40 ERA) will be looking of this first Carolina League win as he takes the mound on Saturday night at Down East. Hatch was hit by a liner during his last start and had to leave the game but won’t miss any time.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 4, Dayton (Reds) 2

South bend jumped out to a 4-0 lead and made it two straight over Dayton and their fourth win in a row.

Hitting Recap: 2B Zack Short (.269) gave South Bend the lead ofr good as he led off the first with his second homer. C Tyler Payne (.111) slugged his first home rof the year in the third, a solo shot, and added a sacrifice fly in the fifth. LF Chris Pieters (.191) tripled and scored in the sixth on a single from RF Luis Ayala (.271). Pieters and Ayala both finished with two hits.

Pitching Chart: In just his second start, Jose Paulino (1-0, 1.80 ERA) held the Dragons to one run over six solid innings to earn the win. The left-hander gave up four hits, didn’t issue a free pass and fanned one in the 68-pitch gem. Paulino recorded 12 ground ball outs and had a game score of 66…. RH Kyle Miller allowed a run in three relief innings to earn his first career save. The right-hander  threw 43 pitches, 23 for strikes, and fanned one.

SB-Cubs News: RHP Michael Rucker has been activated from the Dl and RHP Michael Knighton has been placed on the 7-day DL….. Tyson Miller (0-1, 2.45), the Cubs fourth-round pick last June, makes his fourth start of the year on Saturday against Dayton.
