Myrtle Beach rallied for a win and Bryan Hudson made his season debut for South Bend.

The Cubs Class A teams both rallied for victories while Iowa fell in extra innings. Smokies rained out for second straight day.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock (Rangers) 8, Iowa 7—13 innings

Iowa scored five times the top the ninth but fell in 13 innings. 

Hitting Recap: Mark Zagunis (.189) ripped a pinch-hit three run homer in the ninth as Iowa scored five times to tie the game at 5-5. RF Bijan Rademacher (.214) and LF Chesny Young (.246) added RBI in the frames. The Cubs added two more runs in the tenth on RBI singles from C Victor Caratini (.333) and DH Taylor Davis (.255). Caratini extended his hit streak to nine games and Davis upped his on-base streak to 34 games. Young finished 3-for-6 while 2B Ian Happ (.257) was 1-for-6.

Pitching Chart: Aaron Brooks gave up two runs in the first and the Express added three more in the third but the right-hander battled for six frames, giving up seven hits and two walks while fanning three. Brooks threw 91 pitches and had a game score of 40. Rob Zastryzny tossed three shutout frames, walking three while yielding on hit. The lefty fanned three in the 49-pitch outing. Felix Pena gave up a two-run homer in the bottom of the tenth in his only inning. Ryan Williams (0-2, 7.45 ERA) tossed two shutout frames but the first three hitters of the 13th all reached to give the Express the walk-off win.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa sends RH Seth Frankoff (0-0, 2.80 ERA) to the mound on Monday night in Round Rock. Frankoff made his first start on April 19 at New Orleans, allowing a run over 4.1 innings…..Iowa has placed OF John Andreolion the DL with a right hamstring strain and sent RHP Juan Paniagua back to extended spring training. Jake Buchananwas taken off the 7-day DL and IF Tommy a Stella has been optioned to Iowa from Chicago.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee @ Chattanooga (Twins)—Doubleheader rained out

For the second day in a row, rain wiped out play in Chattanooga. The two teams will play twin-bills on Monday and Tuesday with the series finale on Wednesday. Daniel Corcino and Duane Underwood are scheduled to start the twin-bill on Monday…..Smokies have placed RHP Jhondaniel Medina on the 7-day DL. In three innings (4 games), Medina gave up nine runs on three hits and seven walks.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 7, Down East (Rangers) 4

Myrtle Beach scored four times in the top of the ninth to rally past Down East. 

Hitting Recap: Myrtle Beach grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI single from LF Daniel Spingola (.348). Pelicans added two runs in the seventh on four straight singles from 1B Adonis Paula (.429), RF Robert Garcia (.343), C Tyler Pearson (.280) and OF Eddy Martinez (.190). In the ninth, they loaded the bases on singles by Garcia and Pearson and walk to Martinez. Carlos Sepulveda brought in a run with sacrifice fly and a throwing error on a grounder off the bat of Bryant Flete gave Myrtle Beach the lead. Spingola added two more insurance runs with a two-run double and finished the game 3-for-5. 

Pitching Chart: Coming into the game with an 11-inning scoreless streak, Justin Steele surrendered a RBI double in the first. Steele only lasted three innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk in the 71-pitch outing. Tommy Thorpe surrendered a run in 1.2 frames while Dillon Maples tossed 1.1 scoreless. Craig Brooks (1-0. 0.77 ERA) got the win, fanning four in two shutout frames. James Norwood picked up his second save working the ninth.

Pelicans News: Pelicans have placed C P.J. Higgins on the DL for a sore knee. Higgins was hurt on play at the plate on April 17. 3B Adonis Paula has been activated from the DL…..Pelicans have Monday off and open a three-game homestead on Tuesday against Wilmington  (Royals) with Oscar De La Cruz (1-2, 3.14 ERA) on the mound.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 9, Dayton (Reds) 8

South Bend scored five times in the bottom of the eighth and hung on to take the series from Dayton

Hitting Recap: After Dayton took a 6-4 lead in the top of the eighth, South Bend countered with five runs in the bottom half. Yeiler Peguero upped his hit streak to 11 games with single to leadoff the frame. Isaac Paredes followed with a double and Jhonny Pereda ripped a single to plate Peguero. A single from Chris Pieters tied the game at 6-6 and after Kevonte Mitchell walked to load the bases, a sacrifice fly by Zack Short gave the Cubs the lead. Tyler Payne’s RBI single gave the Cubs another run and back-to-back walks to Darryl Wilson and Peguero forced in another. Paredes, Mitchell and Pieters all finished with two hits.

Pitching Chart: Making his season debut, left-hander Bryan Hudson took the mound on Sunday afternoon in South Bend. The 19-year-old worked into the fifth, allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks. He fanned one in the 72-pitch outing and recorded nine ground ball outs. Duncan Robinson piggy-backed, getting the final two outs of the fifth and tossing three more frames. Robinson gave up two runs on three hits, throwing 48 pitches, and got the win. Wyatt Short recorded his third save but gave up two runs on the ninth on two hits.

SB-Cubs News: South Bend heads to Lansing and will throw RH Dylan Cease (0-1, 0.60 ERA) in the series opener on Monday night……LHP Bryan Hudson, 19, was assigned to South Bend from extended spring training and made the start on Sunday. Hudson, the Cubs third-round pick in 2015 out of high school, struggled with his command last year at Eugene, posting a 5-4 record with a 5.06 ERA in 58 .2 IP, 41 BB, 41 K……To make room for Hudson, South Bend placed RHP Matt Swarmer on the DL.
