Tyler Alamo powers Myrtle Beach to their fifth straight win. Cubs release Jeremy Null.

Myrtle Beach made it five straight while Iowa and Tennessee both lost. South Bend was rained out.

Cubs release Jeremy Null

The Cubs released right-handed pitcher Jeremy Null after parts of four seasons in the organization. The Cubs 15th round pick out of Western Carolina in 2014, Null started his pro career in Mesa and finished up the year in Boise, throwing 16 innings in his first season (2-0, 2.25 ERA). Null excelled in his first full season, going 6-3 with a 2.23 ERA in 12 starts for South Bend and was named the MVP of the Midwest League All-Star game. He earned a mid-season promotion to Myrtle Beach and made nine starts for the Pelicans, posting a 2-3 mark with a 4.70 ERA. Null fanned 82 and only walked 11 between the two Class A levels. Last year, Null spent the entire season back in the Carolina League, making 20 starts and logging 105 innings (5-6, 4.20 ERA). The 23-year-old appeared in three games for Myrtle Beach this season, allowing 12 hits and 10 runs in 7.2 innings, all in relief. 

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Colorado Springs (Brewers) 7, Iowa 0

Four Colorado Springs pitchers combined to blank Iowa.

Hitting Recap: Iowa had their opportunities but were 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. They collected seven hits and drew four walks. RF Bijan Rademacher  (.241) and SS Osvaldo Martinez (.208) both had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Aaron Brooks (2-2, 6.84 ERA) needed 34 pitches to get through the first as the Sky Sox scored four times on four hits and a walk. Brooks finished the game with a line of 4 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 2 B, 2 K. Game score 28…. LH Zac Rosscupfanned two in a scoreless inning while Rob Zastryzny gave up a run over two innings. Dylan Floro tossed a pair of shutout frames, fanning two.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa hasn’t named a starter for Saturday night’s game at Principal Park.

Southern League—AA—Mississippi (Braves) 8, Tennessee 7

Mississippi (11-11) scored four times in the fourth and hung on to beat Tennessee (12-10)

Hitting Recap: 2B David Bote (.295) hit his first homer of the year, a two-run shot in the first to give the Smokies a 2-0 lead. Bote finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored. 3B Jason Vosler (.238) had three hits and a RBI while RF Yasiel Balaguert (.220) went 2-for-5 with two knocked in. 

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (0-2, 5.59 ERA) got the start and only lasted 3.2 innings, surrendering six runs on five hits and three walks. Morrison threw 83 pitches, 47 for strikes, and had a game score of 26. RH Daury Torrez got the final out of the fourth and worked a scoreless fifth to lower his ERA to 0.73. RH David Garner made his season debut and gave up two runs over two innings, allowing two hits and two walks while fanning two. RH Ryan McNeil tossed a 1-2-3 eighth.

Smokies News: Tennessee has not named a starter for Saturday night’s game at Mississippi….The Cubs have released RHP Daniel Corcino. He was signed as a minor league free agent during the off-season and appeared in five games for the Smokies, yielding nine runs in 9.1 innings with nine walks…..Right-handed relief pitcher David Garner has been assigned to Tennessee from extended spring training.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 9, Lynchburg (Indians) 6

Pelicans scored five times in the third and hung for their fifth straight win.

Hitting Recap: C Tyler Alamo (.271) continues to crush baseballs out of the park with his third of the season—a three-run shot to cap off the Pelicans’ five-run third. Alamo finished the night 2-for-5 with four RBI. CF Connor Myers (118) plated a pair of runs while 2B Bryant Flete (.311), LF Daniel Spingola (.322) and RF Robert Garcia (.348) all had two hits. DH Carlos Sepulveda extended his hit streak to six games with a pair of singles and is hitting .208 after starting the year batting .170 after the first 13 games.

Pitching Chart: Making his fifth start, RH Thomas Hatch walked the leadoff man but retired the next six hitters. He ran into trouble in the third, issuing another leadoff walk and then a double. After a run scored on the second out of the inning, another single plated a run and a walk put runners on first and second. A double off the wall made it 5-4 but Hatch got out of the frame without any more damage. The Hillcats opened the fourth with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners, and a sacrifice fly plated another run. Hatch needed 74 pitches to get through four innings and finished with a line of 4 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K. Game score 36 and he saw his ERA raise to 5.64……LH Tommy Thorpe (2-1, 4.26 ERA) got the win in relief, allowing a run over 2.1 frames on two hits and three walks. He fanned three…..RH Pedro Araujo earned his second hold, fanning three over 1.2 scoreless…..RH James Norwood fanned the side in the ninth to collect his third save.

Pelicans News: Justin Steele (1-1, 1.56 ERA) takes the mound on Saturday night in his fifth start.....With the reals of Null, RH Kyle Miller was promoted from South Bend.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend @ Fort Wayne (Padres)—Rained Out

Friday night’s game was postponed due to rain and will be made up as a double header on Saturday. Bryan Hudson (0-0, 4.15 ERA) will makes his second start in Game 1 and Dylan Cease (0-1, 1.89 ERA) will take the hill in Game 2. Cease will be making this fifth start and is looking to bounce back after giving up six hits and three runs over four innings in his last start against Lansing. Cease has recorded 27 strikeouts (tops in Cubs’ minors) against 11 walks over 19 innings and sports a 1.21 WHIP and a .185 BAA.  He was named the MWL’s Pitcher of the Week for April 17-23, fanning seven in six no-hit innings against Great Lakes on April 19.

SB Cubs News: With Kyle Miller heading to Myrtle Beach, South Bend activated RHP Matt Swarmer from the 7-day disabled list. C Alberto Mineo has been placed on the 7-day disabled list and RHP Jared Cheek has been activated from the DL.
