Dylan Cease fanned 10 as South Bend split a twin-bill and Jacob Hannemann’s three-run triple gave the Smokies a victory.

South Bend split a doubleheader, Tennessee won with a four-run seventh, Myrtle Beach had their five-game win streak snapped and Iowa was rained out.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa vs. Colorado Springs—Rained Out

Saturday night’s game was rained out. No make-up date was announced and right-hander Seth Frankoff (0-1, 4.05 ERA) is scheduled to start Sunday afternoon at Principal Park.

I-Cubs Notes: Cubs have released LHP Manny Parra Signed as a free agent for the second time during the off-season, Parra was trying to come back from an injury and rehabbed last year with Chicago.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 6, Mississippi (Braves) 3

Jacob Hannemann’s bases clearing triple in the top of the seventh gave the Smokies a 6-3 win over Mississippi.

Hitting Recap: The Smokies only two runs over the first six innings came from solo homers from Jason Vosler in the second and Erick Castillo in the fifth. After two outs in the seventh, Carlos Penalver singled and Castillo followed with his second hit of the game. Two walks forced in a run and left-handed hitting Jacob Hannemann cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line.  Vosler ended the game 2-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood didn’t figure in the decision but the right-hand worked five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks. Underwood fanned five in the season-high 93-pitch outing. Game score 46….RH James Pugliese (2-1, 0.79 ERA) got credit for the win, working a scoreless sixth…..RH Andury Acevedo recorded his first hold with two scoreless frames and RH Stephen Perakslis earned his first AA save with a perfect ninth.

Smokies News: Sunday’s game has already been postponed and they will try to play a double header on Monday morning in Mississippi. Tennessee has not announced any starting pitchers. 

Carolina League—High A—Lynchburg (Indians) 11, Myrtle Beach 3

Lynchburg pounded Myrtle Beach pitching for 15 hits and snapped the Pelicans five-game win streak

Hitting Recap: Pelicans grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when 2B Bryant Flete (.313) singled, advanced to third on a single from SS Trent Giambrone (.247), and scored on a RBI ground out from RF Eddy Martinez (.214). They added two more in the sixth on a two-run triple from LF Daniel Spingola (.333). Giambrone and Spingola both finished with two hits.

Pitching Chart: Justin Steele (1-2, 3.74) got rocked for 10 hits and didn't make it out of the fifth in the 79-pitch outing.  After a 1-2-3 first, Steele surrendered a solo homer in the second and a pair of doubles led to two more runs in the third. The lefty worked around a pair of singles in the fourth but three straight singles to open the fifth led to three more runs. Steele didn’t help his own cause, making an errant pickoff throw and a wild pitch in the frame. He finished with a line of 4.1 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 79 pitches, 49 for strikes, game score 21.…..RH Scott Effross (7.11 ERA) allowed one of the two inherited runners to score before he recorded the final two outs of the fifth and then gave up five runs over the next two frames. Effross has allowed eight earned runs in four innings in his last three games…..Making his eighth appearance, Craig Brooks got the final five outs and kept the Hillcats off the board to lower his ERA to 0.63 over 14.1 innings.

Pelicans News: Oscar De La Cruz (1-2, 3.26 ERA) gets the start on Sunday afternoon in Lynchburg. 

Midwest League—Low A—Game 1—Fort Wayne (Padres) 7, South Bend 3; Game 2—South Bend 4, Fort Wayne 1

Fort Wayne used a six-run fourth to take the opener and Dylan Cease fanned 10 as the Cubs took the night cap.

Hitting Recap: Game 1—Only three hits in the first game. Cubs grabbed a 1-0 lead when RF Luis Ayala (.250) singled, took second on a throwing error, stole third and crossed home when the catcher’s throw went into left field. An errant pickoff throw gave the Cubs a run in the third and they made it 3-1 in the frame on a RBI single from 1B  Jhonny Pereda (.322). 2B Yeiler Peguero (.314) was 1-for-3 with a double; Game 2—Cubs tied the game in the fourth when Peguero singled, stole second and scored on a RBI single from SS Isaac Paredes (.234). They took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a RBI single from Pereda and LF Kevonte Mitchell (.261) doubled home a pair of runs in the sixth. Mitchell finished 2-for-3 as the Cubs only collected six hits.

Pitching Chart: Game 1Bryan Hudson (0-1, 10.13 ERA) made his second start and after a scoreless first, surrendered a RBI double in the second. The left-hander worked around a walk in a scoreless third but couldn’t make it out of the fourth. A leadoff walk, a single and a wild pitch but the Tin Caps in business, Before the frame was over, Hudson gave up a two-run double, a two-run single and two more free passes. He finished with a line of 3.2 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 4 BB, 1 K, 75 pitches, 38 for strikes, game score 22…..Duncan Robinson only allowed one hit over 2.1 innings but the triple plated a pair of inherited runners in the fourth. Robinson fanned three and threw 32 pitches, 18 for strikes.; Game 2—RH Dylan Cease matched his career-high with 10 punchouts and held the Time Caps to one run on two hits and four walks. Cease threw 91 pitches, 53 for strikes, and left after two outs in the fifth. Cease walked three hitters in the first, forcing in a run, but fanned seven of the next nine hitters he faced. Game score 63…..Making his first appearance since April 19, right-hander Matt Swarmer (2-1, 2.70 ERA) tossed 2.1 shutout frames, including stranding an inherited runner in fifth. The right-hander fanned four in the 39-pitch outing and earned the win.
