Jason Vosler smacked two more homers to lead Tennessee to a sweep and Jeimer Candelario homered in Iowa’s win

Tennessee swept Mississippi and Iowa finally got to play and beat Colorado Springs.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 3, Colorado Springs (Brewers) 2

After having two games rained out, Iowa finally got back on the field and beat Colorado Springs in the series finale.

Hitting Recap: 3B Jeimer Candelario gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the fourth with his fourth homer. Candelario also ripped his PCL best 11th double. Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, the Cubs tied the game on a wild pitch and two throwing errors and that allowed Victor Caratini to score from first after a one-out single. Iowa grabbed a 3-2 lead on Stephen Bruno’s RBI pinch-hit double. Caratini finished 2-for-4.

Pitching Chart: Williams Perez had his best outing as a Cub, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings. The right-hander fanned five and recoded seven ground ball outs in the 99-pitch outing. Game score 55. David Rollins worked a 1-2-3 seventh and got credit for the win. Pierce Johnson earned his first hold with a scoreless eighth and Felix Pena worked the ninth to record his fourth save. 

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa heads to New Orleans for a four-game series and Seth Frankoff (0-1, 4.05 ERA) gets the start on Tuesday night.

Southern League—AA—Game 1—Tennessee 6, Mississippi (Braves) 3; Game 2—Tennessee 7, Mississippi 6—8 innings

Smokies slammed five homers in the twin-bill to sweep the Braves.

Hitting Recap: Game 1—Smokies grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first and never trailed.  After two outs to lead off the game, David Bote walked and went to third on a ground-rule double from Yasiel Balaguert. Both runners scored on Jason Vosler’s two-run double and Vosler crossed home when Ian Rice followed with the third straight double. C Cael Brockmeyer launched his first homer in the third, a two-run shot, and Charcer Burks went deep for the third time this year with a solo blast in the fourth. Balaguert finished 2-for-4 with two doubles.

Game 2—Trailing 6-2 after five, the Smokies scored twice in the sixth and added two more in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Jason Vosler hit his second homer of the game to lead off the frame. He hit his sixth homer of the year in the second, a solo blast. David Bote’s two-out, two-run homer in the top of the seventh sent the game into extras. C Erick Castillo added a two-run single in the sixth. LF Charcer Burks went 2-for-4 with a RBI while Yasiel Balaguert and Andrew Ely both had two hits. Vosler leads the Smokies with 18 RBI and seven homers, six since April 26.

Pitching Chart: Game 1Zach Hedges (3-2, 2.51 ERA) gave up runs in the first, third and fourth but battled for six innings, yielding seven hits and a walk in the 94-pitch outing, a season-high. Hedges fanned six and and had a game score of 57. Brad Markey worked a perfect seventh for his first save. 

Game 2Jen-Ho Tseng fanned seven over five innings but surrendered six runs (five earned) on nine hits and a walk. The right-hander threw 96 pitches and had a game score of 39. Jhondaniel Medina worked a scoreless sixth and James Pugliese (3-1, 0-.68 ERA) fanned four over two shutout frames to earn the win. 

Smokies News: Smokies have Tuesday off and return home for a five-game series with Jacksonville on Wednesday night. No starter has been named but its Trevor Clifton’s turn in the rotation.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach @ Frederick—Rained Out

Pelicans and the Keys were rained out and the two teams will play a twin-bill on Tuesday. Myrtle Beach will send Ryan Kellogg (1-0, 5.40 ERA) to the mound in the opener and Kyle Miller will be making his Carolina League debut in the night-cap.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend

South Bend had Monday off and open a three-game home series with Kane County on Tuesday night. LH Jose Paulino (1-0, 4.50 ERA) gets the ball for the Cubs.
