Zach Hedges used his arm and bat to lead Tennessee and Alberto Mineo delivered the big hit to down Peoria.

Tennessee and South Bend both won, Iowa’s bullpen struggled and Myrtle Beach had their bats silenced.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Salt Lake (Angels) 13, Iowa 11

Salt Lake (20-15) scored three times in the bottom of the eighth and beat Iowa (14-19) for the second straight night.

Hitting Recap: 3B Stephen Bruno (.250) had his first two-homer game as a pro, hitting a two-run shot in the second and a solo blast in the fourth. He finished 2-for-4 and added a sacrifice fly. LF Mark Zagunis (.215) smacked a solo homer in the third and finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. 1B Chris Dominguez (.355) went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. 2B Ian Happ (.298) went 3-for-5 with a RBI while DH Taylor Davis (.284) ripped two doubles and knocked in a run. Iowa scored in each of the first five innings and held a 10-5 lead.

Pitching Chart: RH Alec Mills made his first start since going on the DL on April 14. The 25-year-old went three innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks. LH Zac Rosscup (3.09 ERA) fanned five in two frames, giving up one run. LF David Rollins (8.16 ERA) surrendered four runs in 1.1 frames on six hits and a walk. LH Manny Parra (0-1, 20.25 ERA) got charged with a blown save and took the loss, giving up three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

I-Cubs Notes: RH Seth Frankoff (0-1, 3.33 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday night in Salt Lake…..RHP David Berg and RHP Juan Paniagua have been assigned to extended spring training. RH Alec Mills was activated from the DL.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 7, Jackson (Diamondbacks) 1

Zach Hedges fired seven solid innings and knocked in three runs as Tennessee beat Jackson for the fourth time in the series.

Hitting Recap: Zach Hedges (.182) gave the Smokies a 2-0 leading the fifth with a two-run single and added a RBI groundout in the sixth. C Ian Rice was 2-for-5 with two RBI and LF Jeffrey Baez (.252) had three hits and scored twice. 1B Kevin Cornelius made his Cubs debut and scored two times, walked twice and knocked in a run.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (5-2, 2.59 ERA) fired seven solid frames, surrendering two runs on seven hits and two walks. Hedges fanned six and recorded nine ground ball outs in the 98-pitch outing. Game score 58…..RH Justin Hancock worked a perfect eighth in his Cubs debut, fanning two of the three hitters he faced. Hancock was acquired from the Padres in exchange for Matt Szczur. Ryan McNeil tossed a scoreless ninth.

Smokies News: The Cubs have released LHP Gerardo Concepcion and RHP Jhondaniel Medina. Both pitchers were signed to minor league deals with an invite to spring training during the off-season. Concepcion was originally signed by the Cubs after he left Cuba in 2012. Concepcion made his pro debut last year for the Cubs and was 1-0 with a 5.87 ERA in 7.2 innings this year in Tennessee. Medina had a 11.57 ERA in seven innings for the Smokies, allowing nine runs on five hits and nine walks……RHP Ryan McNeil was activated from the DL and RHP Justin Hancock was assigned to Tennessee……Smokies have not named a starter but Jen-Ho Tseng (3-0, 3.55 ERA) is expected to get the ball.

Carolina League—High A—Lynchburg 3, Myrtle Beach 1

Two Lynchburg pitchers held the Pelicans to one run and took the series opener.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans only run scored in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by LF Daniel Spingola (.340) and 1B Matt Rose (.239). Only five hits for Myrtle Beach.

Pitching Chart: LH Justin Steele (1-3, 2.87 ERA) gave up three unearned runs in the fourth on two hits, a walk and throwing error by Jesse Hodges. Steele threw 85 pitches, 49 for strikes, and finished with a line of 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 3 B, 3 K. Game score 48….Tommy Thorpe (4.74 ERA) tossed three scoreless innings, surrendering two hits and a walk while fanning two. LH Marc Huberman (5.40 ERA) kept the Hillcats off the board in the ninth. 

Pelicans News: Oscar De La Cruz (2-2, 3.68 ERA) looks to even the series on Saturday night in his seventh start……Myrtle Beach has placed RHP James Norwood and OF Connor Myers on the 7-day disabled list. RHP Pedro Araujo has been activated from the DL.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 4, Peoria 3

Alberto Mineo’s two-run double in the fifth helped South Bend (22-12) to their second straight win over Peoria (12-20).

Hitting Recap: DH Alberto Mineo (.284) went 2-for-4 with a walk and delivered a two-run double in the fifth to give the Cubs the lead for good. C Tyler Payne (.136) ripped a RBI single in the second and 3B Zack Short (.278) singled and scored on a single by 1B Jhonny Pereda (.320) in the second to tie the game at 2-2. Pereda extended his hit streak to 16 games, finishing 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.

Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease got the start and fanned seven but didn’t make it out of the fourth inning. The right-hander gave up a two-run homer in the first inning, one of six hits while walking one. Cease threw 89 pitches, 56 for strikes and had a game score of 43…..RH Matt Swarmer (3-1, 2.57 ERA) tossed 3.2 frames, allowing a run on three hits and three walks,. Swarmer fanned three and threw 63 pitches, 36 for strikes, getting credit for the win. Chad Hockin (3.52 ERA) stranded an inherited runner and got the final two outs of the eighth. Dakota Mekkes (0.96 ERA) worked  around a walk in the ninth for his first pro save.
