Some good pithing on Tuesday including a combined shutout from South Bend’s Bryan Hudson and Duncan Robinson.

Iowa, Tennessee and South Bend all used the long ball to help win their games.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 8, Las Vegas (Mets) 7

Jemile Weeks walked and scored in the top of the 10th on a sacrifice fly from Osvaldo Martinez to give Iowa the extra inning win.

Hitting Recap: CF John Andreoli (.272) smacked a two-run homer in the second and Taylor Davis (.280) added a solo blast in the same frame as Iowa built a 5-0 lead. Davis finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. 2B Chesny Young (.310) had his fourth straight multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 with a run scored. 1B Victor Caratini (.349) stayed red-hot with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and a RBI. Jemile Weeks walked twice and scored the winning run in the tenth. SS Osvaldo Martinez (.226) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, including the game winner.

Pitching Chart: Aaron Brooks (7.24 ERA) got the start and went five innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks. He surrendered three homers. The Cubs bullpen saved the day. LH Jack Leathersich (10.29 ERA) fanned three over two scoreless frames and Dylan Floro (2-1, 4.74 ERA) fired two shutout innings to earn the win. RH Justin Grimm pitched the 10th to earn his first save.

I-Cubs Notes: No starter has been named for Wednesday night in Las Vegas…..The Iowa Cubs have placed LHP Manny Parra and RHP Alec Mills on the disabled list and activated IF Jemile Weeks from the DL.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 7, Montgomery (Rays) 1

Tennessee hit three homers and scored seven times over the first two innings to end a three-game losing streak.

Hitting Recap: RF Yasiel Balaguert (.212) launched a three-run homer in the first to give the Smokies a lead they would never relinquish. Tennessee added four more in the second on three-run homer for CF Charcer Burks (.304) and a solo blast from 2B David Bote (.281). Smokies only had two hits after the second inning.

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood (4-1, 4.00 ERA) only allowed up a solo home over five innings to earn the win. The right-hander yielded five hits, walked four and fanned five in the 102-pitch outing. Underwood coaxed five ground ball outs and had a game score of 48….. RH Daury Torrez (0.44 ERA) continues to impress, blanking the Biscuits for three innings for his second hold. The right-hander fanned two and only allowed one hit. Ryan McNeil struckout the side in the ninth.

Smokies News: Zach Hedges (5-2, 2.59 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday morning in Tennessee.

Carolina League—High A—Buies Creek (Astros) 5, Myrtle Beach 1

Hitting Recap: Pelicans were shutout for the first eight frames and finally broke through in the ninth as DH Eddy Martinez (.217) reached on a single and scored on Tyler Alamo’s single. Myrtle Beach had eight hits, two each from 2B Bryant Flete (.303), C Tyler Alamo (.250) and 3B Jesse Hodges (.235). 

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay (3-1, 2.85 ERA) retired the final 17 hitters he faced but a two-run homer in the first and a two-run double in the second gave the Astros a lead they wouldn’t give up. Alzolay fanned seven and only allowed three hits and a walk in the 84-pitch outing. Game score 63. Michael Rucker made his Carolina League debut, allowing a run in the eighth. Marc Huberman worked a scoreless ninth.

Pelicans News: Thomas Hatch (0-3, 6.11 ERA) is still looking for his first pro win as he takes the mound on Wednesday night against Buies Creek…..Myrtle Beach has made a series of roster moves. 2B Carlos Sepulveda has been placed on the 7-day DL with a shoulder injury and replaced on the roster by SS Andruw Monasterio. Monasterio started last season in Eugene but after two weeks was promoted to South Bend, hitting .216/.270/.256 in 48 games. Sepulveda was hitting .196 through 28 games…….RHP Craig Brooks has been promoted to AA Tennessee. Brooks was dominant for the Pelicans, sporting a 0.44 ERA in 20.1 innings in 12 games. The right-hander fanned 30 against just nine hits and six walks allowed……RHP Michael Rucker has been promoted from South Bend to replace Brooks on the roster. The right-hander registered a 1.42 ERA in seven relief appearances for South Bend, striking out 22 without walking a batter in 12.2 innings.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 1, Dayton (Reds) 0

Bryan Hudson and Duncan Robinson combined to blank the Dragons and Wladimir Galindo homered to provide the offense.

Hitting Recap: In his third game back from the DL, Wladimir Galindo (.306) homered in the bottom of the seventh to provide the only run of the game. Only four hits for South Bend, singles from DH Yeiler Peguero (.302), 1B Alberto Mineo (.267) and LF Kevonte Mitchell (.233).

Pitching Chart: Make it three straight solid starts for lefty Bryan Hudson (4.13 ERA). The Cubs third-round pick on 2015 tosses five scoreless frames, recording 10 ground ball outs and throwing 70 pitches, 41 for strikes. Hudson allowed three hits and walked two for a game score of 62. Duncan Robinson was even better, The right-hander improved to 5-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.34 with four no-hit innings of relief. Robinson fanned five and only issued one walk in the 55-pitch effort.

SB-Cubs News: Manuel Rondon (4-1, 4.91 ERA) takes the hill Wednesday morning at Four Winds Field against Dayton….C Michael Cruz has been promoted to South Bend and C Tyler Payne has been placed on the 7-day disabled list. Cruz was the Cubs seventh-round pick last June out of Bethune-Cookman and hit .238/.370/.331 with two homers and 15 RBI in 40 games for Mesa in the Arizona Rookie League.
