Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 6, Las Vegas (Mets) 5
Iowa scored four times in the top the eighth to take the series finale.
Hitting Recap: C Victor Caratini gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead in the first with a RBI single and another run scored on the play on a throwing error from the catcher. In the eighth, Iowa loaded the bases on a walk to John Andreoli and singles from Chesny Young and Mark Zagunis. Osvaldo Martinez brought home the first run with a RBI single and Caratini added another RBI with a ground out. An error scored the third run and Stephen Bruno capped off the frame with a sacrifice fly.
Pitching Chart: Seth Frankoff got the start and pitched into the sixth, allowing just one run on a solo homer. He allowed six hits, walked two and fanned seven in the 92-pitch outing….RH Felix Pena got charged with four runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Jack Leathersich tossed a scoreless eighth and Justin Grimm worked around a walk and hit in the ninth for his second save.
I-Cubs Notes: Iowa returns home to host Tacoma (Mariners) on Friday night as former I-Cub Daniel Vogelbach returns to Principal Park.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee 2, Birmingham (White Sox) 1
Jen-Ho Tseng fired a gem and the Smokies took the series opener.
Hitting Recap: Smokies took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jeffrey Baez walked and eventually scored on a fielding error. They made it 2-0 in the fifth when Andrew Ely doubled and scored on another Baron’s error. Tennessee had ten hits, two each from Ely, Yasiel Balaguert, Jason Vosler and Kevin Cornelius.
Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng improved to 4-1 with six strong innings. The right-hander allowed one unearned run on four hits and two walks. Tseng fanned four and had a game score of 65 in the 98-pitch outing……RH Brad Markey tossed two shutout frames and Andury Acevedo recorded his third save with a scoreless ninth.
Smokies News: Tennessee has not named a starter for Friday night but its Trevor Clifton’s turn in the rotation. The Barons will counter with Michael Kopech, one of the White Sox top pitching prospects.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 7, Buies Creek (Astros) 1
Pelicans salvaged the final game of the series behind a strong pitching performance from Justin Steele.
Hitting Recap: DH Tyler Alamo put the Pelicans up 2-0 with a two-run homer, his sixth of the season. Matt Rose added a three-run blast in the fourth as the Pelicans scored four times in the inning. Alamo and Rose both finished with two hits. P.J. Higgins and Eddy Martinez both added RBI.
Pitching Chart: Justin Steele (2-3, 2.65 ERA) kept the Astros in check for six innings, giving up one run on six hits and two walks. The lefty fanned six in the 96-pitch outing. Pedro Araujo fired two shutout relief innings and Marc Huberman tossed a scoreless ninth.
Pelicans News: Oscar De La Cruz (3-2, 2.97 ERA) makes his eighth start on Friday night in Salem.
Midwest League—Low A—Lansing (Blue Jays) 5, South Bend 1
Lansing spoiled Jason Heyward’s rehab stint with a win in the series opener.
Hitting Recap: Seeing his first game action since going on the DL with a thumb injury, Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward grounded out in his first two at-bats and then delivered a RBI single in the sixth. Heyward played right field and left the game in the top of the eighth. 1B Vimael Machin (.282) doubled and scored while the Cubs only other two hits were singles from LF Kevonte Mitchell (.248) and Zack Short (.266).
Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease (1-2, 2.65 ERA) left the game in the second inning with an apparent leg injury he suffered while covering third base. Cease threw one warmup pitch after the injury and left the game. He finished with a line of 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. Matt Swarmer had another solid outing, fanning five in 5.1 innings while allowing one run on four hits and a walk. Chad Hockin left the game after getting hit by a liner in the ninth. Pedro Silverio got the final three outs.
