Jake Buchanan tossed seven shutout innings to lead Iowa to a win.

Rough night for the Cubs affiliates as South Bend and Myrtle Beach both lost leads late and the Smokies were no-hit for over six innings.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 2, Tacoma (Mariners) 1

Jake Buchanan tossed seven shutout innings as the Cubs beat Tacoma in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: Iowa grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when 1B Jeimer Candelario (.337) doubled and scored on a single from 3B Chris Dominguez (.328). LF Mark Zagunis (.246) gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead in the sixth with a RBI single, scoring CF John Andreoli (255) who reached on an error. Only four hits for the I-Cubs

Pitching Chart: Jake Buchanan (2-2, 4.75) dominated Tacoma for seven innings, allowing just four hits and a walk. He fanned four and recorded 10 ground ball outs in the 97-pitch gem. Game score 74. Zac Rosscup allowed a run in two innings of relief and earned the save.

I-Cubs Notes: No starter has been named for Saturday night’s game against Tacoma.

Southern League—AA—Birmingham (White Sox) 3, Tennessee 1

Birmingham pitching kept the Smokies in check on Friday night.

Hitting Recap: Tennessee’s only run of the game came in the first when Jeffrey Baez walked and eventually scored on a RBI ground out by Yasiel Balaguert. Only three hits for the Smokies, singles by Andrew Ely, Yasiel Balaguert and Jason Vosler.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (3-2, 2.42 ERA) only gave up two runs and pitched into the seventh but ended up taking the loss. Clifton threw 92 pitches, 55 for strikes, and fanned two. Craig Brooks made his AA debut, allowing an unearned run in 1.1 innings 

Smokies News: Preston Morrison is in line to make the start on Saturday in Birmingham. 

Carolina League—High A—Salem (Red Sox) 7, Myrtle Beach 6

Salem scored three times in the bottom of the ninth and won on a walk-off single in the tenth to take the series opener.

Hitting Recap: Daniel Spingola and Matt Rose both had two hits and scored once as the Pelican collected nine hits in the loss. Rose, Adonis Paula and Andruw Monasterio all knocked in runs. Eddy Martinez scored twice and stole a base.

Pitching Chart: Oscar De La Cruz got the start and threw 87 pitches, 55 for strikes, for a game score of 55. De La Cruz finished with a line of 5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Michael Rucker got the final two outs of the sixth and tossed a scoreless seventh for his first hold. Dillon Maples kept the Red Sox off the board in the eight but couldn’t close the door in the ninth, giving up a two-run triple and a game tying single with two outs. Scott Effross got the final out of the ninth, standing two inherited runners, but a walk, a stolen base and a single ended the game with two outs in the tenth.

Midwest League—Low A—Lansing (Blue Jays) 5, South Bend 4

Lansing rallied late to beat South Bend for the second straight night.

Hitting Recap: South Bend was held to five hits in the loss. 2B Yeiler Peguero was 2-for-5 with a RBI and Darryl Wilson delivered a two-run single to give the Cubs a 3-2 lead in the sixth. Isaac Paredes went 1-for-2 with a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Jose Paulino need 87 pitches to get through four innings and left after facing one hitter in the fifth. The lefty finished with a line of 4 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K. RH Tyler Peyton made his pro debut, fanning three in three scoreless innings. Michael Knighton (0-1, 6.14 ERA) got charged with a blown save and took the loss, allowing three unearned runs over the final two innings.
