The Cubs have a pair of first round picks in the 2017 draft, # 27 and # 30. They also hold the 67th overall pick in the second round and #150 in the third round. Cubs selected last in round 4-40. The draft begins June 12 with the first two runs, round 3-10 will be held on June 13, and rounds 11-40 will be on June 14. Scout.com's Jeff Ellis has the Cubs taking Nick, a high school shortstop from San Diego with their first pick and South Carolina right-hander Clarke Schmidt, who tore his UCL and needed Tommy John surgery. John Manuel at Baseball America has the Cubs taking RH Blayne Enlow, a prep from Louisiana, and Quentin Holmes, a prep outfielder from New York. And in the latest from MLB.com, Jonathan Mayo has the Cubs getting Allen and LHP Brandon Little from State College of Florida. Cubs have also been tied to outfielder Heliot Ramos, considered the best prospect coming out of Puerto Rico this year, and Nate Pearson, a hard-throwing right-hander from Central Florida Junior College.
Cease to the DL
Right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease has been placed on the 7-day disabled list after hurting his ankle in his start on Thursday night. Cease texted Chicago Tribune reporter Mark Gonzales and told him he was fine after the game but the Cubs aren’t taking any chances with the top pitching prospect and sent him to the DL. In eight starts for South Bend, Cease is 1-2 with a 2.65 ERA with 54 K in 34 IP. MWL hitters are batting .212 against him and he sports a 1.26 WHIP. South Bend activated RHP Michael Knighton from the DL.
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Tacoma (Mariners) 7, Iowa 5
Tacoma (26-15) scored four times in the top of the ninth to even the series with Iowa (19-22).
Hitting Recap: Iowa grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second as 1B Chris Dominguez (.323) and Taylor Davis (.292) both singled. RF Bijan Rademacher(.232) ripped a run-scoring double and a single by 2B Osvaldo Martinez (.247) made it 2-0. SS Elliot Soto (.167) plated the third run on a RBI ground out. With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, 3B Jeimer Candelario (.333) led off with a solo homer over the right-center field wall, his fifth of the season. Cubs added a run in the ninth on back-to-back doubles from C Victor Caratini (.354) and Davis.
Pitching Chart: Making this first start since 2014, Juan Paniagua went 4.2 innings, holding Tacoma to one run on five hits and two walks. He fanned four and threw 78 pitches. Miguel Mejia got the final out of the fifth but gave up two runs in the sixth. David Rollins tossed 1.2 frames and got the game to the ninth. After only allowing one hit in his first three AAA appearances, Justin Grimm surrendered four runs in the ninth, three coming on a homer by Mike Zunino. LH Jack Leathersich got the final out.
I-Cubs Notes: RH Aaron Brooks (3-3, 7.24 ERA) makes his ninth start on Sunday afternoon. Books has surrendered seven homers and 57 hits over 41 innings…..Catcher Victor Caratini leads all Cubs minor leaguers with a .354 average and is also tops in hits (51) and RBI (29). He sports an OBP of .395 and is slugging .521 in 38 games. The former second-round pick of Atlanta in 2013, Caratini was acquired at the deadline in 2014 for LHP James Russell and OF Emilio Bonifacio……The Cubs have placed IF Jemile Weeks on the 7-day disabled list.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee @ Birmingham (White Sox)—Postponed Rain
Saturday night’s game was postponed due to rain and the two teams will play a double header on Sunday. Preston Morrison and Duane Underwood are expected to start but James Pugliese has been called on to start in two twin-bills this season.
Carolina League—High A—Salem (Red Sox) 9, Myrtle Beach 2
Eloy Jimenez smacked his second homer but the Pelicans only had four hits in the loss.
Hitting Recap: RF Eloy Jimenez (.320) launched his second homer of the year, a long drive over the left field wall in the sixth to give Myrtle Beach a 2-1 lead. Jimenez knocked in a run in the first with a groundout and finished 2-for-4. 3B Jesse Hodges (.234) doubled and SS Trent Giambrone (.212) led off the game with single and scored.
Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (1-2, 5.06 ERA) held the Red Sox to a solo homer over five innings, fanning three in the 93-pitch outing. Kellogg allowed three hits and two walks for a game score of 54. Entering the game having not allowed a run in 11.2 relief innings, Casey Bloomquist (2-4, 6.25 ERA) had that streak come to a screeching halt, allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks while only recording three outs. Kyle Miller fanned three and gave up a run over the final two innings.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 11, Lansing (Blue Jays) 7—6 innings
South Bend scored 11 runs in the third and the game was called in the bottom of the sixth due to rain.
Hitting Recap: Trailing 5-0, South Bend erupted in the third when they loaded the bases and LF Kevonte Mitchell (.244) drew the third straight walk of the inning. CF Darryl Wilson (.206) was hit by pitch to make it 5-2 and 1B Jhonny Pereda (.288) snapped an 0-for-18 streak with a RBI single. Making his first start behind the plate, C Michael Cruz (.200) cleared the bases with three-run double and he scored on a RBI single from RF Brandon Cummins (.277) for a 7-5 Cubs lead. A single by DH Zack Short (.274) and another hit by pitch packed the bases and Cummins scored on a wild pitch. Mitchell ripped a two-run double down the left field line and then scored on Vimael Machin’s RBI single to cap off the 11-run inning.
Pitching Chart: Tyson Miller (2-3, 4.31 ERA) had a rough first inning as the leadoff hitter reached on an error and three straight singles made it 1-0. The next batter walked to make it 2-0 and after a force out at home, another run scored when the Cubs were unable to turn a double play. The fourth single of the inning made it 4-0 and another walk loaded the bases and ended his 36-pitch night…..RH Jared Cheek (1-1, 3.75 ERA) stranded three inherited runners, coaxing a ground out to finally end the first. Cheek got the win and finished with a line of 3.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K. RH Dakota Mekkes (0.79 ERA) tossed a pair of scoreless frames.
