Duncan Robinson and Seth Frankoff turned in solid outings on Tuesday night.

South Bend wins in extras, Iowa falls, Tennessee had the day off and Myrtle Beach was rained out. More prospects signed.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Reno (D-Backs) 2, Iowa 1

Reno pitching kept Iowa’s bats silent as they took the series opener.

Hitting Recap: P Seth Frankoff (.077) provided the only offense for the Cubs with RBI single in the fifth, scoring 1B Taylor Davis (.293), who doubled. 3B Jeimer Candelario (.322) doubled in the first as Iowa was held to three hits.

Pitching Chart: Seth Frankoff (0-2, 3.16 ERA) tossed a season-high seven innings, allowing two runs of four hits and two walks. He fanned a season-best eight hitters and recorded 10 ground ball outs in the 96-pitch outing…..LH David Rollins (7.32 ERA) retired all six hitters he faced, two on strikes.

I-Cubs Notes: RH Jake Buchanan (2-2, 4.75 ERA) takes the mound on Wednesday afternoon against Reno at Principal Park……LHP Zac Rosscup has been promoted to Chicago and RHP Dylan Floro has been sent back to Iowa. Rosscup pitched on Monday night at Wrigley, retiring both hitters he faced, and was sent back to Iowa on Tuesday. RHP Felix Pena was promoted to Chicago from Iowa as the revolving door continues…..Iowa currently has 10 players on the 7-day DL—pitchers Alec Mills, Conor Mullee, Manny Parra, Williams Perez, Fernando Rodriguez, Jose Rosario, Ryan Williams and Rob Zastryzny; and infielders Jemile Weeks and Chesny Young.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee

Smokies (25-19) had Tuesday off and return home on Wednesday night for a five-game series with Biloxi (Brewers). The Smokies have a half-game lead over Jackson and Montgomery, who are both 25-20.

Hitting Recap: Tennessee’s offense has been led by 3B Jason Vosler (.296/.392/.519) and 2B David Bote (.276/.358/.441). Vosler has a team-high seven homers and also is tops in run scored with 25. Bote leads the team with 25 RBI. OF Charcer Burks, currently on the DL, is hitting a team best .304 with six stolen bases and 24 walks. C Ian Rice has five homers and a .391 OBP.

Pitching Chart: RH Zach Hedges leads the starting pitchers with five wins and 48.1 innings pitched, sporting a 2.79 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. RH Jen-Ho Tseng has been just as impressive as he leads the staff with a 1.00 WHIP and has a 2.74 ERA in 46 frames. RH Trevor Clifton (3-2, 2.42 ERA) has a team-high 37 K in 44.2 frames with a 1.16 ERA. RH Duane Underwood (4-3, 4.39 ERA) and Preston Morrison (0-4, 4.10 ERA) round out the starting rotation. Daury Torrez has only allowed one earned run over 22.2 innings with 20 strikeouts in 12 appearances. RH James Pugliese (3-2, 1.38 ERA) has tossed 26 innings that includes three starts. Andury Acevedo hasn’t allowed a run in nine games (11 IP) since joining the team, recording three saves. 

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach vs. Winston Salem (White Sox)—Rained out

Tuesday night’s game was rained out and the two teams will play a twin-bill on Wednesday night. Justin Steele (2-3, 2.65 ERA) and Oscar De La Cruz (3-2, 3.24 ERA) are the scheduled starters. The Pelicans (23-22) are four games behind Buies Creek with 25 games left in the first half.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 4, Bowling Green (Rays) 1—10 innings

South Bend scored three times in the top of the tenth to even the series in Bowling Green.

Hitting Recap: A sacrifice bunt with two men on turned into a Little League homer and gave the Cubs the win. DH Alberto Mineo (.258) led off the 10th with a double and 1B Wladimir Galindo (.290) followed with walk. 3B Vimael Machin (.297) laid down a sacrifice bunt and by the time the play was over, Bowling Green committed two throwing errors and three runs had scored. South Bend tied the game in the third when LF Luis Ayala (.248) walked, stole second (7), and scored on a fielding error by the shortstop.  Galindo and Machin both finished with two hits.

Pitching Chart: Duncan Robinson (1.36 ERA) continues to retire MWL hitters at a high rate. The right-hander fired six solid innings, allowing just a solo homer, one of five hits. He fanned three and recorded 10 ground ball outs in the 89-pitch outing, 60 for strikes…..Tyler Peyton (0.00 ERA) made his second pro appearance and the right-hander fanned five and recorded four ground ball outs in three scoreless innings. Dakota Mekkes (0.76) got a double play to end the game in the 10th to record his second save. 

SB-Cubs News: Jose Paulino (2-0, 4.28 ERA) takes the mound on Wednesday night in Bowling Green…..South Bend has placed OF Darryl Wilson on the 7-day disabled list and assigned OF Zach Davis to South Bend from extended spring training. Wilson, 20, was hitting .206/.286/.357 in 39 games with eight stolen bases and three homers. Davis was the Cubs 32nd round pick last year out of Texas Tech and he played in six games for Mesa last year after signing (3-for-16). Davis went 0-for-3 in his MWL debut on Monday night at Bowling Green.

Cubs add prospects

The Cubs have signed five more international prospects and they’re expected to make their pro debut when the Dominican Summer League begins in June.

Two pitchers that have been assigned to Cubs 1 roster in the DSL are right-handers Edward Vasquez and Benjamin Rodriguez. Vasquez, 19, is 6-foot-3 and its his first pro contract. The 17-year-old Rodriguez is 6-foot-1 and weighs 165 pounds. Both hail from the Dominican Republic.

A pair of catchers will make their debuts with Cubs 2—Miller Chacon and Jonathan Soto. Chacon, 18, is from Venezuelan and hits from the right side. Soto, 18, is listed at 143 pounds and he’s a left-handed hitter. 

The Cubs also signed Rochest Cruz, a 17-year-old left-handed hitting shortstop from the Dominican Republic. He will play for Cubs 1.
