Thomas Hatch fanned a career-high 13 hitters while Seth Frankoff, Duane Underwood and Manuel Rondon all had solid outings.

Strong pitching performances highlighted Saturday night’s action but only South Bend came away with a win.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Memphis (Cardinals) 5, Iowa 2

A pinch-hit three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth gave Memphis (31-20) the win over Iowa (22-27).

Hitting Recap: Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth when 1B Chris Dominguez (.295) singled, stole second, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch. RF Bijan Rademacher (.223) led off the sixth with a double and tied the game on a RBI single from C Taylor Davis (.302), who finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Cubs had seven hits and went 1-for-12 with RISP.

Pitching Chart: Seth Frankoff (0-2, 2.90 ERA) held the Redbirds to one run over a season-high seven innings. Frankoff only gave up three hits and a walk while fanning six in the 94-pitch outing, 57 for strikes. Frankoff coaxed eight ground ball outs and had a game score of 77…..LH Jack Leathersich (0-2, 9.26 ERA) only got one out in the eighth, surrendering a three-run homer. RH David Berg (0.00 ERA) got the final two outs of the frames but not before allowing an inherited runner to score on two hits.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa has not named a starter for Monday’s game in Memphis.

Southern League—AA—Biloxi (Brewers) 2, Tennessee 1

Biloxi scored twice in the sixth and salvaged the final game of the series against the Smokies.

Hitting Recap: Smokies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth as LF Charcer Burks (.301) led off with a single and advanced to third on double from 2B David Bote (.276). Burks scored on a sacrifice fly by RF Yasiel Balaguert (.214) for the only run of the game. Only five hits for the Smokies, two from Burks.

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood (4-2, 4.39 ERA) made his ninth start and retired the first seven hitters he faced before a one-out walk in the third. After retiring the first two hitters in the fourth, a single and a walk put two runners on. A fly ball ended the frame and Underwood added a scoreless fifth after a one-out single. Biloxi got a leadoff double to start the sixth but the runner was cut down when Underwood fielded a bunt and fired to third to get the Shucker. Another double put two runners in scoring position and the first run scored when a hitter struckout and the runner on third raced home on the throw to first. Underwood then uncorked another wild pitch for a 2-1 Biloxi lead. Throwing 103 pitches, 67 for strikes, Underwood finished the game with a line of 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K. Game score 61……RH Daury Torrez  (0.35 ERA) extended his scoreless streak to 19.2 innings with two shutout frames……RH Andury Acevedo (0.00 ERA) worked around two hits in the ninth to extend his scoreless streak to 14 innings.

Smokies News: Tennessee has Monday off and head to Montgomery (Rays) for a five-game series that begins on Tuesday night. A starter has not been named.

Carolina League—High A—Carolina (Brewers) 4, Myrtle Beach 1

Carolina scored three times in the bottom of the sixth and spoiled a career-night for Thomas Hatch.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans out hit the Mudcats 9-7 but were 1-for-7 with RISP. They scored their only run of the game in the fourth on three singles from DH Eloy Jimenez (.324), 1B Matt Rose (.237) and 3B Jesse Hodges (.252). Jimenez is batting .324/.468/.568 with three homers and 10 RBI in 12 games since joining the team.

Pitching Chart: Thomas Hatch (0-5, 5.19 ERA) gave a glimpse of why some evaluators think the right-hander is one of the top pithing prospects in the Cubs organization. The Cubs third-round pick last June fanned a career-high 13 hitters, including the side twice, and also set a career-mark with 5.1 innings. Hatch kept the Mudcats off balance with his mix of four pitches but it was his fastball command that set it all up. Despite the punchouts, Carolina got on the board in the first after a walk, the only one Hatch issued. The runner stole second, advanced to third when the throw from P.J. Higgins went into center, and scored on as ingle. After the 13th strikeout to start the sixth, Trent Giambrone was charged with an error on a shot to short and the next hitter doubled down the left field line to score the run and end Hatch’s night after 96 pitches-71 for strikes. RH Casey Bloomquist surrendered a two-run homer to the first hitter he faced for a 4-1 deficit. Bloomquist finished with a line of 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3K.

Pelicans News: LH Justin Steele (2-3, 2.44 ERA) takes the mound on Monday afternoon at Carolina.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 3, Fort Wayne (Padres) 1

Zack Short and Vimael Machin powered the offense while Manuel Rondon kept the TinCaps in check with a season-high six innings.

Hitting Recap: South Bend grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third.   RF Luis Ayala (.264) led off the frame with a double and 2B Yeiler Peguero (.278) drew a two-out walk. 3B Vimael Machin (.282) then tripled to right, scoring two runs. The Cubs added their final run in the eighth when SS Zack Short (.273) lined a deep drive to center field and circled the bases when the outfielder’s relay throw missed the cutoff man. It was originally scored a triple but later changed to an inside-the-park homer. Cubs only had five hits, including to a pair of doubles from Ayala.

Pitching Chart: Manuel Rondon (6-2, 5.20 ERA) tossed a season-high six innings, holding the TinCaps to one run on five hits and a walk. The left-hander fanned four and threw 89 pitches, 54 for strikes. Game score 65. Jared Cheek (2.25 ERA) fired two scoreless frames, yielding three hits with one punchout. Wyatt Short (3.60 ERA) retired all three hitters he faced in the ninth for his fourth save.

SB-Cubs News: Duncan Robinson (5-1, 1.36 ERA) makes his fifth start of the year on Monday afternoon at Four Winds Field against Fort Wayne. The right-hander sports a 0.91 WHIP in 39.2 innings.
