Pacific Coast League—AAA—Nashville (A’s) 5, Iowa 2
Franklin Barreto smacked a grand slam in the top of the ninth as Nashville took the series opener.
Hitting Recap: Iowa only had four hits but took a 2-1 lead in the third on a two-run homer from RF Bijan Rademacher (.235), his third. C Victor Caratini (.344) went 2-for-4 with a double while DH Taylor Davis singled and scored.
Pitching Chart: Aaron Brooks (3-4, 7.57 ERA) had his best outing in an I-Cubs uniform, only surrendering one unearned run in six innings. Brooks gave up four hits, walked three and fanned six in the 89-pitch outing. Game score 65. Zac Rosscup fanned four in 1.2 scoreless relief innings. RH Felix Pena stranded an inherited runner and got the final out of the eight but couldn't close the door, giving up a grand slam with two outs after a walk, hit-by pitch and a single.
I-Cubs Notes: Casey Kelly (2-0, 4.85 ERA) makes his fourth start since joining Iowa at Principal Park on Friday night against Nashville.
Southern League—AA—Montgomery (Rays) 9, Tennessee 2
Montgomery made it three straight over Tennessee scoring nine times over the first three innings.
Hitting Recap: Smokies took a 1-0 lead in the first on Jason Vosler’s ninth homer of the season, an opposite field shot. LF Charcer Burks (.288) doubled home C Erick Castillo (.273) in the eighth as the Smokes finished with five hits.
Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (0-4, 3.52 ERA) gave up five singles and three runs in the first and if not for a double play, it could have been worse. The Biscuits added six runs in the third, hitting a pair of homers, and then scored three more on three doubles and walk. Morrison finished with a line of 2.2 IP, 11 H, 9 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. The Smokies bullpen kept Montgomery off the board. Brad Markey (2.1 IP, 3 K), David Garner (1 IP), Ryan McNeil (1 IP, 1 K), and Andury Acevedo (1 IP) all pitched in relief. Acevedo extended his scoreless streak to 15 innings.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 4, Down East (Rangers) 2
Ryan Kellogg pitched into the seventh and Eddy Martinez had three hits as Myrtle Beach evened the series with Down East
Hitting Recap: Pelicans grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fifth on a RBI double from 3B Jesse Hodges (.269) and a RBI single from CF Connor Myers (.130). LF Daniel Spingola (.298) doubled and scored on a passed ball into sixth and RF Eddy Martinez (.228) made it 4-0 with his sixth homer of the season. Martinez finished 3-for-4 while Spingola and C Tyler Alamo (.255) both had two hits.
Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (2-3, 4.62 ERA) blanked the Wood Ducks for six innings but ran out of gas in the seventh, giving up a pair of runs on a RBI triple and a ground out. Kellogg threw 96 pitches, 65 for strikes, and recorded seven ground ball outs. He finished with a line of 6.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. Game score 68…..RH Casey Bloomquist (5.35 ERA) earned his second save, tossing 2.1 innings of no-hit relief. Bloomquist fanned four and only needed 25 pitches.
Pelicans News: Adbert Alzolay (5-1, 2.72 ERA) is establishing himself as one of the top arms in the Carolina League and the right-hander makes his 11th start against Down East on Friday night. The Venezuelan native is second in the Carolina League with a 0.98 WHIP among starters……After being scratched from Wednesday’s start, right-hander Oscar De La Cruz has been placed on the 7-day disabled list. In nine starts, De La Cruz is 4-2 with a 3.42 ERA in 47.1 innings with 42 strikeouts. LHP Tommy Thorpe was activated from the DL.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, Dayton (Reds) 4
Luis Ayala’s two-run single in the top of the ninth capped off a three-run rally and gave South Bend the series win over Dayton.
Hitting Recap: South Bend scored three times in the top of the ninth and rallied for the win. Vimael Machin got the ninth started with a one-out single and Wladimir Galindo followed with another base hit. After a strikeout, pinch-hitter Alberto Mineo delivered a RBI single. Jhonny Pereda drew a walk to load the bases and Luis Ayala lifted a line drive to left field for two more runs. Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the third on a RBI double from Roberto Caro and Caro added a RBI triple in the fifth. Machin, Ayala and Caro all finished with two hits.
Pitching Chart: LH Bryan Hudson (0-1, 4.12 ERA) recorded 11 ground ball outs and kept Dayton in check for five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk. Hudson didn’t record any strikeouts in the 62-pitch outing. Game score 52…..RH Tyler Peyton (2-0, 2.13 ERA) got the win with three innings of relief. Peyton gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts……LH Wyatt Short (3.43 ERA) worked himself into a jam in the ninth with a pair of walks and an infield single off Short’s shoe to load the bases. On a 3-2 pitch, Short got a ground ball to second for a game-ending double play for his fifth save.
SB-Cubs News: Manuel Rondon (6-2, 5.20 ERA) gets the ball on Friday night as the Cubs face Lake County for a three-game series….. With the win over Dayton, the Cubs only trail the Dragons by one game and are three behind first-place West Michigan.
