Thomas Hatch won his first pro game, Duncan Robinson was solid and Seth Frankoff continues to roll.

Iowa and Myrtle Beach both flew the “W” while Tennessee and South Bend lost.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 5, Nashville (A’s) 1

Seth Frankoff won his first game since joining the Cubs organization and Victor Caratini homered.

Hitting Recap: RF Stephen Bruno (.306) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI to lead the offense. C Victor Caratini (.347) smacked his fifth homer, a solo shot in the fourth, and finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. CF John Andreoli (.222), 2B Chesny Young (.286) and SS Osvaldo Martinez (.224) all knocked in runs.

Pitching Chart: Seth Frankoff (1-2, 2.77 ERA) continues to rack up solid outings. The right-hander continued his dominance in the PCL, limiting the Sounds to a solo homer over 5.2 innings while allowing five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. LH David Rollins (6.08 ERA) got the final out of the sixth and tossed a scoreless seventh. RH Conor Mullee (0.00 ERA) fanned two in a shutout eighth and worked a 1-2-3 ninth to extend his scoreless streak to 6.2 innings (four games).

I-Cubs Notes: No starter has been named for Sunday’s match-up with Nashville….RHP David Berg has been assigned to Tennessee, RHP Juan Paniagua has been sent to extended spring training, and LHP Manny Parra has been activated from the DL.

Southern League—AA—Montgomery (Rays) 12, Tennessee 4

Montgomery (30-25) roughed up Tennessee (30-24) pitching for 16 hits and took four-of-five in the series.

Hitting Recap: 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.214) slugged a three-run homer in the first to give the Smokies the lead but that was short lived. Tennessee was held to three hits with 3B Jason Vosler (.290) adding a RBI single in the third. 

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood (4-4, 5.51 ERA) didn’t make it out of the fourth, getting tagged for nine earned runs on 12 hits and a walk. He surrendered one homer and fanned five in the 77-pitch outing, 53 for strikes. Daury Torrez (0.33 ERA) tossed 1.1 scoreless frames to extended his scoreless streak to 22.2 innings. RH David Berg (5.40 ERA) got charged with three runs in 1.2 frames, allowing four hits and two walks. Ryan McNeil (3.65 ERA) fanned two in 1.1 shutout relief innings. 

Smokies News: No starter has been named for Sunday’s game against Birmingham.……RHP Preston Morrison has been placed on the 7-day disabled list and RHP David Berg has been assigned to the Smokies from AAA.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 10, Down East (Rangers) 2

Myrtle Beach (31-25) pounded Down East (21-24) pitching for 16 hits and Thomas Hatch won his first game as a pro with 6.1 shutout innings.

Hitting Recap: Every starter had at least one hit as the Pelicans scored four times in the first and never looked back. SS Andruw Monasterio (.229) led the hit parade with three singles, a run scored and a RBI. 1B Matt Rose (.232) homered (10) for the second straight game, a two-run shot in the first, while 3B Trent Giambrone(.225) lined a hanger over the left field wall for a solo shot in the seventh, his fourth. DH Tyler Alamo (.261) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and LF Eloy Jimenez (.291) had two hits and a RBI. C P.J. Higgins (.252) and CF Robert Garcia (.250) both finished with two hits.

Pitching Chart: Thomas Hatch (1-5, 4.53 ERA) recorded his first win as a pro in impressive fashion, blanking the Wood Ducks for a career-high 6.1 innings in the 91-pitch gem. The right-hander coaxed nine ground ball outs and gave up five hits and a walk while fanning five. Game score 71. LH Jordan Minch (2.00 ERA) got the final two outs of the seventh, stranding three inherited runners, but surrendered a two-run homer in the eighth. Dillon Maples (2.15 ERA) fanned the side in the ninth.

Pelicans News: Justin Steele (3-3, 2.55 ERA) makes his 11th start of the year on Sunday against Down East.

Midwest League—Low A—Lake County (Indians) 5, South Bend 3

Lake County (19-35) used a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to even the series with South Bend (34-21).

Hitting Recap: Cubs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when 1B Jhonny Pereda (.266) walked, took third on a single from CF Luis Ayala (.291) and scored on Roberto Caro’s sacrifice fly. DH Isaac Paredes (.242) delivered a RBI single in the third and SS Vimael Machin (.297) scored Ayala on a RBI ground out in the fourth for a 3-1 advantage. Cubs had six hits as Ayala finished 2-for-3 with a walk and swiped his ninth base.

Pitching Chart: Duncan Robinson (5-2, 1.34 ERA) wasn’t on anyone’s radar at the start of the season, but the 6-foot-6 right-hander has everyone’s attention. Robinson fanned a career-high nine hitters and held the Captains to one run over seven innings, allowing four hits and walk in the 86-pitch gem. Game score 78……A double, a walk and a throwing error by Wladimir Galindo loaded the bases with one out in the eighth off RH Chad Hockin (0-2, 4.43 ERA). The right-hander then surrendered a grand slam for a 5-3 Lake County lead.

SB-Cubs News: Erling Moreno (0-0, 3.86 ERA) gets the ball on Sunday afternoon in Lake County. Moreno tossed four shutout frames in his first start since April 10 in his last outing against Dayton.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 vs. Pirates

Results were not available at the time of publishing. When they do become available, the game will be added.  Cubs 1 and the rest of the DSL have Sunday off and face the Pirates in a rematch on Monday.

Dominican Summer League—Rojos 1, Cubs 2 (0), 

An RBI double with two outs in the fourth was the only run of the game in the opener for both teams.

Hitting Recap: Only five hits for the Cubs. CF Ricardo Verenzuela, SS Josue Huma and LF Carmelo Alfonzo all singled in their pro debuts.

Pitching Chart: Making his pro debut, Columbian Danis Correa (0-1, 0.00 ERA) tossed five solid innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits. Correa recorded eight ground ball outs and had a game score of 61. Ivan Medina worked the final three scoreless innings, allowing three hits to go along with three punchouts.

Cubs Notes: Cubs 2 have Sunday off and face Rojos in a rematch on Monday.
