Pacific Coast League—AAA—Colorado Springs (Brewers) 7, Iowa 3
Colorado Springs (34-24) used a three-run fifth to take the series opener from Iowa (26-35).
Hitting Recap: Cubs had eight hits and scored all three of their runs in the fourth to tie the game. RF Mark Zagunis (.243) smacked a two-run homer, his ninth of the season. 1B Victor Caratini (.337) went 3-for-4.
Pitching Chart: Williams Perez (0-7, 7.54 ERA) got the start and surrendered six runs (three earned) on six hits dn three walks. He fanned five in the 93-pitch outing. RH David Berg (1.00 ERA), recalled from Tennessee earlier in the day, tossed 1.1 scoreless frames and allowed one of two inherited runners to score. Pierce Johnson (5.87 ERA) allowed a run over the final two innings with four strikeouts.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 4, Jackson (D-Backs) 2
Trevor Clifton and three relievers kept Jackson in check and took the series opener.
Hitting Recap: 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.219) went 2-for-4 with a RBI double in the sixth and a solo homer in the ninth, his fourth. SS Andrew Ely (.298) went 2-for-3 with a run scored while 3B Jason Vosler (.265) and 2B David Bote (.267) both knocked in runs.
Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (2.52 ERA) got the start and went five innings, throwing 93 pitches, 59 for strikes. The right-hander gave up two runs in the fourth and allowed five hits and two walks to go along with five punchouts. Game score 55. The Smokies bullpen closed the door. Craig Brooks (1-1, 5.63 ERA) recorded his first AA win, working a 1-2-3 sixth. All-Star reliever Daury Torrez (1.14 ERA) picked up his third hold with three punchouts over two shutout frames. Ryan McNeil (3.07 ERA) got the final three outs for his third save.
Carolina League—High A—Carolina (Brewers) 1, Myrtle Beach 0
Myrtle Beach got (35-26) shutout for the first time this season as Carolina (33-27) moved to within 1.5 games of first.
Pitching Chart: RH Thomas Hatch (1-6, 4.23 ERA) had another solid outing but got no run support The right-hander allowed one run on four hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. Hatch fanned four and threw 93 pitches, 60 for strikes, Game score 63……LH Jordan Minch (1.64 ERA) stranded an inherited runner in the sixth and tossed a scoreless seventh. Casey Bloomquist (5.53 ERA) kept the Mudcats off the board in the eighth and the ninth.
Midwest League—Low A—Great Lakes (Dodgers) 4, South Bend 0
Three Great Lakes pitchers combined to blank South Bend.
Pitching Chart: Duncan Robinson (5-3, 1.38 ERA) tossed six solid innings but took the loss, giving up a first inning solo homer. The right-hander allowed four hits, walked two and fanned a pair in the 86-pitch outing, 54 for strikes. Robinson recorded nine ground ball outs and had a game score of 59. Michael Knighton (5.68 ERA) worked a scoreless seventh but surrendered a thee-run homer in the eighth.
SB-Cubs News: No starter has been named for Saturday night’s tilt in Great Lakes…..Right-handed relief pitcher Dakota Mekkes has been added to the East Team for the Midwest League All-Star game. Mekkes (3-0, 0.58 ERA, 0.90 WHIP) started the year with 11 no-hit innings and has recorded 47 strikeouts in 31 frames with four saves in 18 games. The 22-year-old was the Cubs 10th round pick last June out of Michigan State……OF Chris Pieters was activated from the DL and RHP Michael Knighton was assigned to South Bend from extended spring training. OF Brandon Cummins has retired and RHP Matt Swarmer has been assigned to extended spring training.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (8), Brewers/Indians 4
Cubs (2-4) scored four times in the fourth and hung on to beat the co-op squad.
Hitting Recap: Cubs had nine hits and drew six walks in the win. DH Albert Hinirio (.250, ’16-DR) had two hits, including an triple and knocked in two runs. RF Jose Jules (.190, ’14-Ven) had two hits, scored twice and stole his second base while Fernando Kelli (.333, ’15-Ven) went 2-for-5 with a RBI. 3B Christopher Morel (.120, ’15-DR) went 1-for-3, scored twice and tole two bases.
Pitching Chart: RH Yovanny Cruz (1-0, 1.13 ERA, ’16-DR) fanned six over five innings and earned his first pro win. Cruz allowed one run on four hits and didn't walk anyone. Francisco Gracia (13.50 ERA,, ’16-Mex) gave up a run in two innings of relief and Omar Ventura (4.50 ERA, ’14-Ven) got charged with two runs over the final two innings.

Mets scored three times in the third and took advantage of three Cubs errors.
Hitting Recap: Cubs outhit the Mets 8-5. 1B Franklin Tineo (.417, ’13-DR) went 2-for-4 with a RBI double and a run scored. 3B Orian Nunez (.423, 15-DR) had two hits and scored once while 2B Henrry Pedra (.200, ’13-Ven) singled home a run.
