Myrtle Beach’s Adbert Alzolay tossed seven shutout frames and Zach Short smacked a walk-off homer to lead South Bend on Tuesday night.

Myrtle Beach moved closer to first half title with a shutout, South Bend wins on a walk-off while Iowa, Tennessee and both DSL team lose.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 8, Nashville (A’s) 4

Iowa scored six times in the top of the seventh and beat Nashville to take the series opener.

Hitting Recap: RF Mark Zagunis (.250) ripped a thee-run triple to highlight the Cubs six-run seventh. 2B Chesny Young (.272), DH John Andreoli(.211) and SS Elliot Soto  (.210) plated runs in the frame as the Cubs sent 12 men to the plate. C Victor Caratini (.340) smacked his sixth homer of the year, a solo shot in the sixth, and Jacob Hannemann (.290) added a RBI single in the fifth.

Pitching Chart: RH Casey Kelly (5.10 ERA) went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and five walks. Kelly fanned three, gave up an home run, and threw 87 pitches, 48 for strikes. David Berg (2-0, 0.90 ERA) retired all three hitters he faced and got credit for the win. Jack Leathersich (6.75 ERA), Andury Acevedo (8.10 ERA) and Pierce Johnson (5.63 ERA) all tossed a scoreless inning of relief. 

I-Cubs Notes: Cubs face Nashville on Wednesday night and a starter has not been named. 

Southern League—AA—Jackson (Diamondbacks) 8, Tennessee 7

Jackson (34-31) scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to rally past the Smokies (35-29). 

Hitting Recap: Smokies had 11 hits as several players had good nights at the plate. LF Charcer Burks (.310) went 3-for-4 with a walk while 3B Jason Vosler (.270) was on base four times with three walks, a double and three RBI.  1B Yasiel Balaguert (.227) and C Cael Brockmeyer (.176) both had two hits and two RBI. 

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (.4.88 ERA) got the start and didn’t figure in the decision, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings. Morrison fanned one and had a game score of 31 in the 87-pitch outing. Craig Brooks (7.00 ERA) gave up two runs in the sixth on a hit and a walk. Justin Hancock (0-2, 6.30 ERA) got charged with a blown save and took the loss, working a scoreless seventh before surrendering two runs in the eighth on three singles and a walk.

Smokies News: No starter has been named for Wednesday’s series opener against Chattanooga at Smokies Stadium.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 2, Frederick (Orioles) 0

All-Star Adbert Alzolay tossed seven shutout innings as Myrtle Beach lowered their magic number for the first half title down to 2. 

Hitting Recap: Pelicans grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when RF Eloy Jimenez (.288) singled and scored on a two-out double from 1B Matt Rose (.221). C P.J. Higgins (.237) hit his first homer of the year, a solo shot in the eighth. 3B Jesse Hodges (.275) added a single as the Pelicans were held to four hits. 

Pitching Chart: RH Adbert Alzolay (6-1, 2.83 ERA) fanned six over seven shutout innings in the 89-pitch gem. Alzolay recorded seven ground ball outs, gave up five hits and walked two for a game score of 74. Pedro Araujo (2.12 ERA) fanned four over two shutout innings for his third save. 

Pelicans News: RH Thomas Hatch (1-6, 4.23 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night against Frederick.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 3, Lansing 2

Zack Short hit a walk-off solo homer in the bottom the 13th to give the Cubs the win over Lansing in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: Zack Short’s homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the 13th gave the Cubs the win. Short finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two walks. Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI single from Alberto Mineo and tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth on a RBI bunt single from Vimael Machin. Cubs had 11 hits and drew nine walks but are 2-for-15 with RISP and left 16 on.

Pitching Chart: LH Manuel Rondon got the start and lasted five innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and four walks. The bullpen blanked Lansing for eight frames. Right-hander Jared Cheek (2.45 ERA) and Chad Hockin (4.21 ERA) both tossed two scoreless innings while LH Wyatt Short (2.67 ERA) went three frames without giving up a run, the longest outing of his career. Pedro Silverio (4-3, 5.00 ERA) worked around a hit and two walks in the 13th to earn the win.

SB-Cubs News: RH Duncan Robinson (5-3, 1.36 ERA) takes the mound on Wednesday night against Lansing.

Dominican Summer League—Dodgers 2 (5), Cubs 1 (0)

Cubs (3-6) were held to three hits and blanked by four Dodgers (8-1) pitchers. 

Hitting Recap: Only three hits for the Cubs, singles from CF Fernando Kelli (.300), LF Carlos Pacheco (.222) and RF Jose Jules (.214). 

Pitching Chart: LH Luis Silva (0-1, 9.95 ERA) got the start and allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks with three wild pitches. RH Bryan Molina (9.53 ERA) tossed 2.2 scoreless frames with three strikeouts and RH Francisco Gracia (7.71 ERA) retired all six hitters he faced, one on strikes. 

Cubs Notes: Cubs battle the first-place Dodgers on Wednesday.

Dominican Summer League—Brewers 8, Cubs 2 (2)

Cubs (3-6) were held to three hits and the Brewers (5-4) scored five times in the ninth.

Hitting Recap: Only three hits for the Cubs as CF Tony Rijo (.200) went 1-for-3 with a walk and a RBI. DH Jonathan Soto (.259) added a RBI while Franklin Tineo (.429) doubled. SS Josue Huma (.139) went 1-for-4 with a run scored. 

Pitching Chart: Jonathan Bruzual (0-2, 7.50 ERA) fanned seven over four innings but gave up two runs on three hits and two walks and took the loss. Jose Gomez (1.42 ERA) got charged with an unearned run in three innings. Freddy Tineo (8.53 ERA) gave up five runs in the ninth and Fernando Calderon (3.18 ERA) got the final three outs.
