Thomas Hatch fired eight shutout innings to help Myrtle Beach clinch the first half title.

Myrtle Beach clinching the first half title was the highlight of the night as the rest of the teams went 0-4.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Nashville (A’s) 6, Iowa 1

Nashville held Iowa to five hits and evened the series.

Hitting Recap: Cubs could only score one run. In the sixth, CF Jacob Hannemann (.286) singled with one out, took second on a ground out and scored on a single from 3B Jeimer Candelario (.264). 

Pitching Chart: Making his first start since his MLB debut, RH Seth Frankoff (1-3, 3.113 ERA) gave up four runs on six hits and a walk over five innings. Frankoff fanned three and gave up a pair of homers. Conor Mullee (10.61 ERA) surrendered a pair of runs in the sixth while David Rollins (5.72 ERA) and Fernando Rodriguez (6.00 ERA) both tossed a scoreless frame.

I-Cubs Notes: RH Williams Perez (0-7, 7.54 ERA) gets the start on Thursday against former Cubs prospect Paul Blackburn (4-5, 3.11 ERA)……..Iowa has activated IF Tommy La Stella from the DL and placed C Ali Solis on the DL. RHP Zach Hedges has been promoted from Tennessee and RHP David Berg has ben sent back to Tennessee.

Southern League—AA—Chattanooga (Twins) 8, Tennessee 1

Chattanooga scored four times in the second and downed Tennessee in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: Smokies scored their only run of the game in the sixth when RF Charcer Burks (.314) led off with a single, advanced to third on a double from SS Andrew Ely (.292) and scored on a ground out off the bat of 2B David Bote (.278). Burks finished 2-for-4 with a triple.  

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (5-3, 2.84 ERA) kept the Lookouts off the board for five innings but they scored four times in the second, three coming on a home run from top prospect Nick Gordon. Clifton threw a season-high 106 pitches and finished with a line of 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K. RH Brad Markey (3.97 ERA) allowed two runs in the seventh, his only inning of work. Dillon Maples (4.50 ERA) tossed a scoreless eighth in his second AA appearance, and Ryan McNeil (4.02 ERA) surrendered a two-run homer in the ninth.

Smokies News: Duane Underwood (5-4, 5.11 ERA) gets the ball on Thursday night as the Smokies look to even the series…..RHP Zach Hedges has been promoted to Iowa and RH David Berg has seen sent from Iowa to Tennessee. Hedges made 12 starts in AA, going 6-5 with a 4.06 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP in 71 innings, 46 K, 15 BB.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 3, Frederick (Orioles) 0

Thomas Hatch tossed eight shutout frames as the Pelicans blanked the Keys and clinched the first half title.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when 2B Bryant Flete (.291) doubled, took third on a sacrifice bunt by C P.J. Higgins (.234) and scored on a wild pitch. SS Trent Giambrone (.228) smacked his fifth homer, a two-run blast over the left field wall in the second. CF Robert Garcia finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Pitching Chart: RH Thomas Hatch (2-6, 3.69 ERA) had one of the best outings of his brief pro career, tossing a career-high eight shutout innings. Hatch only needed 85 pitches, 58 for strikes, and scattered six hits and a walk. He fanned seven and got seven ground ball outs in the gem. Game score 81, the highest for any Cubs minor leaguers this season. James Norwood fanned two in a scoreless ninth.

Pelicans News: Justin Steele (4-3, 2.51 ERA) gets the ball on Thursday night at Down East……..IF Adonis Paula was activated from the DL and assigned to South Bend.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend vs. Lansing (Blue Jays)

South Bend and Lansing were rained out on Wednesday and the two teams will play a twin-bill on Thursday. Duncan Robinson (5-3, 1.36 ERA) and Erling Moreno (1-0, 3.38 ERA) are scheduled to start the doubleheader.

SB-Cubs News: With five games remaining, the Cubs find themselves one game behind Dayton for the wild card spot and 4.5 games behind first-place West Michigan.…. C Tyler Payne has been assigned to Eugene and 3B Adonis Paula has been sent from Myrtle Beach to South Bend. Paula will fill in for Wladimir Galindo, who’s out for the season with a broken leg.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene

The Emeralds open the season on Thursday night at home against Vancouver. The Ems send 19-year-old Javier Assad, a right-hander from Mexico, to the mound against the Canadians. Eugene preview story coming later today.

Dominican Summer League—Dodgers 2 (11), Cubs 1 (10)

Cubs lost the slugfest as they committed seven errors that led to six unearned runs.

Hitting Recap: Best offensive game for the team as they collected 11 hits in the loss. 1B Luis Hidalgo (.333), who led the Cubs DSL teams last year in homers, smacked a pari of bombs and finished 3-for-4 with a double, four runs scored and four RBI. LF Carlos Pacheco (.290) ripped three singles, scored three times and added a RBI. Fernando Kelli (.311) went 2-for-5 with a double and a RBI. 

Pitching Chart: Pitchers didn’t get much help from their defense. Edward Vasquez (0.96 ERA) got the start and went five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Omar Venturawas charged with six runs on seven hits and a walk in two innings. Miguel Estevez (0-1, 0.00 ERA) took the loss as all three runs he surrendered were unearned.

Cubs Notes: Cubs battle the Indians on Thursday.

Dominican Summer League—Brewers 5, Cubs 2 (3)

Brewers (6-4) scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to knock off the Cubs (3-7).

Hitting Recap: Cubs took a 3-2 lead in the eighth on a RBI single from C Jonathan Soto (.258), scoring 2B Josue Huma (.128). They tied the game earlier in the eighth on a wild pitch. Ricardo Verenzuela (.143) evened the score in the third with a RBI triple. SS Orian Nunez (.350) and 3B Henrry Pedra (.250) both had two hits. 

Pitching Chart: RH Jesus Tejada (1.13 ERA) had another solid outing, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over five innings. He fanned three and recorded five ground ball outs. Ferrol Heredia (0.00 ERA) got charged with an unearned run, allowing no hits or walks while fanning two in two innings of relief. Wander Feliz (1-1, 7.71 ERA) gave up three runs in the eighth and took the loss.
