Ramsey Romano, the Cubs 31st round pick from Long Beach, posted on his Instagram account “Thankful and beyond excited for the opportunity that the Cubs organization have given me to continue my baseball career at the next level! Time to go to work.” Romano was drafted out of high school by the Cubs (35th round) in 2013. In 61 starts for Long Beach this year, the San Diego native slashed .313/.340/.382 with two homers and 39 RBI. Romano could find himself in Eugene after signing as he started his career in Michigan and won a JUCO National Championship in 2016 for Yavapai.
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 8, Omaha (Royals) 1
Iowa (29-40) scored early and often and took the series opener from Omaha (34-32).
Hitting Recap: 1B Victor Caratini(.346) has been the Cubs best hitter in the minors during the first half of the season and that continued on Saturday night as the 23-year-old went 3-for-4 and knocked in three runs to lead the offense. Cubs scored four times in the first and then added two runs in the second and third. RF Mark Zagunis (.248) slugged his 10th homer of the season and finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jacob Hannemann (.333) continued to square up AAA pitching, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Stephen Bruno (.264) delivered a two-run double. Former Cub Jorge Soler returned to Principal Park and went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Pitching Chart: Aaron Brooks (4-5, 6.10 ERA) turned in his third quality start over his last four outings, holding Omaha to a solo homer over seven innings. Brooks fanned six and gave up four hits and a walk in the 93-pitch outing. LH David Rollins fired 1.1 scoreless relief innings and RH Fernando Rodriguez struckout both hitters he faced in the ninth.
I-Cubs Notes: Iowa has not named a starter for Sunday’s afternoon game against the Storm Chasers.
Southern League—AA—Chattanooga (Twins) 7, Tennessee 5
Chattanooga scored four times in the sixth and beat the Smokies for the second straight night.
Hitting Recap: Smokies grabbed the lead with a four-run second. 3B Jason Vosler (.274) led off with a walk and Ian Rice followed with his ninth homer over the left-center field wall. SS Carlos Penalver (.255) made it back-to-back bombs with his second blast of the year. Jeffrey Baez (.202) kept the rally going with single, advanced to second on a balk and scored on Erick Castillo’s single. CF Trey Martin (.280) added a RBI single in the fourth and finished 3-for-5. Rice ended the night 2-for-4.
Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng (6-1, 2.71 ERA) answered a three-run first with four shutout frames but got tagged for four more runs in the sixth. Only three of the runs were earned as the right-hander allowed seven hits and two walks in the 94-pitch outing. Game score 36. David Garner (2.81 ERA) fanned two in two shutout frames and Craig Brooks (6.30 ERA) worked a scoreless ninth despite walking three.
Smokies News: Preston Morrison (0-5, 4.88 ERA) makes his 12th start on Sunday in the series finale and the final game before the all-star break.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 4, Down East (Rangers) 2—10 innings
Bryant Flete’s pinch-hit single in the 10th gave the Pelicans the lead and their 19th win in the last 24 games.
Hitting Recap: Making his first start in the leadoff spot, SS Andruw Monasterio (.228) led off with a double and was a dead duck as he tried to steal third but the pitcher’s throw to third bounced off the third baseman’s glove and Monasterio raced home. Pelicans were blanked until the eighth when 1B Matt Rose (.222) slugged his 11th homer of the year for a 2-1 lead. In the tenth, RF Robert Garcia (.231) led off with a walk, stole second and scored on single by PH Bryant Flete (.291), who was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. 2B Trent Giambrone (.232) followed with his third homer of the week and seventh of the season. Monasterio and Giambrone both finished 2-for-4.
Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (3-3, 3.86 ERA) had a solid outing as the left-hander tossed six frames, allowing just one run on three hits and three walks. Kellogg fanned four and had a game score of 65 in the 93-pitch outing. LH Tommy Thorpe (3.72 ERA) worked a scoreless seventh. Pedro Araujo (4-0, 1.99 ERA) got charged with an unearned run in the eighth and eventually got the win, fanning four in two innings. Scott Effross (5.14 ERA) worked around a walk and a single in the ninth for his fourth save.
Pelicans News: Pelicans have not named a starter for Sunday’s game at Down East, the final tilt before the all-star break…..Right-handed reliever Pedro Araujo has been added to the Southern Division for the Carolina League all-star game. Araujo has appeared in 19 games this season, posting a 3-0 record and 2.12 ERA with three saves. The native of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic has allowed 21 hits in 29.2 innings, striking out 31 against five walks. Opponents are batting just .189 against Araujo, who has allowed just two runs over his last 10 appearances. RHP Adbert Alzolay, LHP Justin Steele, OF Eloy Jimenez, OF Daniel Spingola and IF Bryant Flete were also named all-stars.
Midwest League—Low A—Lake County (Indians) 5, South Bend 3—10 innings
Lake County scored a run in the top of the ninth to tie the game and then added two more in the 10th for the win.
Hitting Recap: RF Chris Pieters (.243) was on base five times, going 3-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. C Jhonny Pereda (.250) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. LF Roberto Caro (.283) and CF Luis Ayala (.276) were both 1-for-3 with a RBI.
Pitching Chart: LH Jose Paulino (2-2, 6.04 ERA) matched his season-high with six innings, fanning seven with no walks. Paulino surrendered a pair of solo homers as two of the three hits left the yard. RH Chad Hockin (3.90 ERA) tossed two shutout frames with three punchouts for his fourth hold. LH Wyatt Short (1-2, 3.41 ERA) got charged with a blown save and took the loss, giving up three runs, including a pair of homers.
SB-Cubs News: Bryan Hudson (0-2, 4.53 ERA) takes the mound in the final game before the all-star break on Sunday against Lake County. The 20-year-old has given up 17 hits over his last two starts, totaling 8.1 innings.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 4, Vancouver (Blue Jays) 2
Eugene scored three times in the bottom of the sixth and earned their first win of the season.
Hitting Recap: After getting shutout the first five innings, the Emeralds finally broke through in the sixth. Rafael Narea (.182) reached on an error and went to second on single from Miguel Amaya (.250). Gustavo Polanco (.417) then doubled to left, scoring both runners. Polanco moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a double from Jhonny Bethencourt (.286). Amaya added a RBI single in the seventh. Polanco and Amaya both finished with two hits.
Pitching Chart: The Cubs fifth-round pick last June out of Duke, Bailey Clark gave up two runs in the first but settled down to blank the Canadians over the next three frames. Clark finished with a line of 3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. Yapson Gomez was nearly perfect and earned the win in relief, fanning four while issuing just one walk over 3.1 no-hit innings. Michael Knighton recorded the final six outs for his first save.
Emeralds Notes: Enrique De Los Rio takes the mound on Sunday against Vancouver……OF Tolly Filotei was assigned to Eugene from extended spring training. Filotei was the Cubs 38th round pick last year and slashed .161/.299/.179 in 24 games for Mesa. Filotei went 0-for-2 in his NWL debut.
Dominican Summer League— Rays 2 (5), Cubs 1 (3)
Rays built a 5-0 lead and withstood a late Cubs rally.
Hitting Recap: Cubs only had five hits and scored all their runs in the eighth on a solo homer from 3B Fidel Matos (.275) and a two-run blast by C Daniel Diaz (.300). DH Henderson Perez (.167) walked twice and scored a run.
Pitching Chart: Carlos Paula (0-2, 3.00 ERA) made his third start and went four innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits with four punchouts. He allowed a homer and had a game score of 40. Miguel Estevez (1.13 ERA) tossed four innings of relief and gave up a run on a hit and a walk with four punchouts.
Cubs Notes: Cubs have Sunday off and have a rematch with Rays on Monday.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (4), D-Back 2 (3)
Cubs (6-7) scored in three straight innings to down the D-Backs (3-10).
Hitting Recap: Henrry Pedra’s two-run double in the bottom of the fourth gave the Cubs the lead for good. Jonathan Soto (.279) went 2-for-4 with a triple and a RBI while 3B Josue Huma (.157) had two hits, walked once and scored a run.
Pitching Chart: Didier Vargas (1-0, 0.63 ERA) earned his first pro win as the right-hander from Panama fanned six over five innings. Vargas allowed one run on three hits and walk for a game score of 65. Riger Fernandez (4.05 ERA) got charged with two runs in 1.1 innings as he walked five. Freddy Tineo (6.00 ERA) got the save, striking out five over 2.2 no-hit innings.
