South Bend’s Bryan Hudson and Iowa’s Casey Kelly turned in solid outings on Sunday, and lots of homers.

Iowa blasted Omaha, Myrtle Beach stayed red-hot while South Bend and Eugene both won.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 16, Omaha (Royals) 3

Iowa collected 16 hits and scored a season-high 16 runs to beat the Storm Chasers for the second straight game.

Hitting Recap: Seven of the nine starters had multi-hit games, everyone in starting lineup scored at least once and eight of the nine got credit for RBI. SS Elliot Soto (.231) had the biggest game, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. LF John Andreoli (.209) went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI while 3B Jeimer Candelario (.268) was 2-for-4 with his 8th homer, driving in a pair and scoring three times. CF Jacob Hannemann (.333) and RF Bijan Rademacher (.268) both had two hits and two RBI while 2B Stephen Bruno (.272) and 1B Taylor Davis (.271) had two hits and one RBI.

Pitching Chart: Casey Kelly (4-1, 4.50 ERA) only surrendered a solo homer over six innings, one of eight hits. Kelly fanned six and threw 89 pitches, 61 for strikes.  Keep an eye on Kelly, the 27-year-old could find himself in Wrigley if he keeps compiling quality starts in the PCL. Jack Leathersich (6.05 ERA), Manny Parra (17.05 ERA) and Conor Mullee (9.00 ERA) all pitched in relief. 

I-Cubs Notes: Seth Frankoff (1-3, 3.13 ERA) gets the ball on Monday night in the third game of the series. 

Southern League—AA—Chattanooga (Twins) 10, Tennessee 2

Chattanooga (42-28) scored four times in the third and closed out their first half title with another victory over Tennessee.

Hitting Recap: Smokies only offense came from a pair of solo homers from Jason Vosler (13) and Cael Brockmeyer (4). Smokies had eight hits, two from 1B Kevin Cornelius

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (0-6, 5.26 ERA) got tagged for six runs on seven hits and a walk in his six innings. Morrison threw 93 pitches, 61 for strikes, and fanned four. Daury Torrez (1.24 ERA) was charged with three unearned runs and Justin Hancock (6.00 ERA) gave up a run in his inning of relief. Dillon Maples (2.25 ERA) fanned two in a scoreless ninth. 

Smokies News: Smokies start their all-star break on Monday and return to action for the second half on Thursday at Mobile. 

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 8, Down East (Rangers) 3

Myrtle Beach ended the first half at 43-27 and upped their mark in June to 15-2.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans battered Wood Ducks’ pitching for 12 hits including homers by Eloy Jimenez (7) and Jesse Hodges (6). Jimenez (.278) hit a two-run blast in the Pelicans’ three-run third while Hodges added a solo shot in the second, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored. 2B Bryant Flete (.294) and DH Daniel Spingola (.285) both had two hits and knocked in a run while C Tyler Alamo (.250) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Pitching Chart: Casey Bloomquist (5.48 ERA) made the spot start and went three innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. Dakota Mekkes (0.00 ERA) got the win, fanning two in a pair of no-hit frames. Jordan Minch (1.84 ERA) got charged with a run in his two innings and James Norwood 1.64 ERA) closed it out with a pair of zeros. 

Pelicans News: The first-half champs begins their all-star break on Monday and return to action on Thursday when they host Down East for the first of four games. 

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 9, Lake County (Indians) 3

South Bend ended the first half at 39-30 with a win over Lake County on Sunday.

Hitting Recap: DH Isaac Paredes (.262) gave the Cubs the lead for good in the first with a two-run homer (4) and ended the day 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and three RBI. 3B Vimael Machin (.294) slugged his fifth long ball and ended the game with three RBI. CF Luis Ayala (.276) went 1-for-3 with a run and a RBI and Zack Short (.242) was on base twice with a walk and a double. 

Pitching Chart: LH Bryan Hudson (1-2, 4.19 ERA) picked up his first win, tossing six solid innings and holding the Captains to a solo homer, one of six hits. Hudson only issued one free pass, recorded 10 ground ball outs and fanned five in the 91-pitch outing. Game score 58. Pedro Silverio (4.74 ERA) tossed a pair of shutout relief innings and Jared Cheek (3.65 ERA) surrendered two runs in the ninth. 

SB-Cubs News: No game for South Bend on Monday as the all-star break starts. Team opens the second half with an eight-game road trip, four each at Great Lakes and Fort Wayne. Dylan Cease, Duncan Robinson and Yeiler Peguero will represent South Bend on the East squad. Wladimir Galindo was named an all-star but will miss the rest of the season with a broken leg. 

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 6, Vancouver (Blue Jays) 1

Eugene scored in five straight innings and evened the series with Vancouver. 

Hitting Recap: Eugene pounded Vancouver pitching for 14 hits and pushed across six runs. 1B Gustavo Polanco (.467) looks like a professional hitter, going 2-for-3 with his first NWL homer, a solo shot, and finished with two RBI. CF Zach Davis (.333) added a pair of RBI with two hits while 2B Jhonny Bethencourt (.455) was 3-for-4 with a run scored. 3B Rafael Narea (.286) and LF Joe Martarano (.273) both had two hits and plated a run. 

Pitching Chart: Enrique De Los Rio made his first NWL start after making 14 relief appearances last year for the Ems. The 22-year-old right-hander earned the win, holding the Canadians to one run over five innings on three hits (solo homer) and a walk. He fanned five, recorded six ground ball outs and threw 65 pitches, 45 for strikes. Mark Malave fanned one in a 1-2-3 sixth and Luis Aquino retired the first seven hitters he faced, four on strikes, before a walk with one out in the ninth. The right-hander got the final two outs and earned his first save. 

Emeralds Notes: Matt Swarmer makes his first start for Eugene on Monday night in the series finale after tossing 37 innings for South Bend in 11 relief appearances (3-1, 3.89 ERA, 6 BB, 39 K).

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (4-9)

Not many wins for the Cubs the first time through division play but it didn’t help they’ve committed 24 errors in 13 games. Dodgers 2 leads the division at 11-1, the best mark in the DSL. 

Hitting Recap: OF Fernando Kelli leads the team with a .302 batting average while LF Carlos Pacheco leads the team with 10 runs and 10 walks with two homers and six RBI. Luis Hidalgo has a pair of homers and a team-best eight RBI and 22 total bases. 

Pitching Chart: The current starting rotation is RH Carlos Paula, 17, (0-2, 3 GS, 12 IP, 6 BB, 9 K, 1.33 WHIP), RH Yovanny Cruz, 17, (1-0, 1.50 ERA, 3 GS, 12 IP, 1 BB, 13 K, 1.08 WHIP); RH Keiber Arredondo, 19, (0-1, 3.48 ERA, 10.1 IP, 6 BB, 12 K, 1.16 WHIP); LH Luis Silva, 20, (0-1, 9.95 ERA, 6.1 IP,  5 BB, 5 K, 2.21 WHIP); and Edward Vasquez, 19 (1-0, 0.96 ERA, 9.1 IP, 2 BB, 4 K, 0.86 WHIP). They're all in their first year expect Silva, his second.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (6-7)

After Monday’s game against the D-Backs, the Cubs will have gone through the division the first time, facing the other seven squads. Mets 2 leads the division at 9-4. 

Hitting Recap: Franklin Tineo paces the offense with a .371 average and also tops the team with a .657 slugging percentage and a .488 on-base percentage. 3B Orian Nunez is also off to good start at .360/.396/.460 with a team-high 23 total bases and five stolen bases. 

Pitching Chart: The starting rotation for the team is LH Didier Vargas, 18, (3 GS, 1-0, 0.63 ERA, 14.1 IP, 4 BB, 12 K, 0.70 WHIP); Emilio Ferrebus, 19, (3 GS, 1-1, 2.77 ERA, 13 IP, 3 BB, 12 K, 1.08 WHIP); RH Danis Correa, 17, (0-2, 2.31 ERA, 3 GS, 11.2 IP, 3 BB, 6 K, 1.29 WHIP); RH Jesus Tejada, 20, (0-0, 1.13 ERA, 2 GS, 8 IP, 3 BB, 4 K, 0.88 WHIP); and LH Jonathan Bruzual, 17 (0-2, 7.50 ERA, 2 GS, 6 IP, 4 BB, 7 K, 2.00 WHIP). Vargas, Correa and Bruzual are all in their debut seasons. Reliever Ivan Medina, 21, (1-0, 0.66 ERA) leads the team with 14 strikeouts and sports a 0.88 WHIP in 13.2 innings.
