Zambrano, Cubs tap the Rockies

CHICAGO - The Colorado Rockies were served a painful reminder of what having LHP Shawn Estes in your starting rotation every five games can do to a team. Estes (4-2) walked five and gave up nine runs on seven hits in just 2 2/3 innings Friday while Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano threw a complete game 2-hitter, as the Chicago Cubs blanked Colorado, 11-0.

The Cubs scored six runs in the second inning off Estes, including Corey Patterson's three-run double. Moises Alou and Aramis Ramirez both added an RBI single, and Ramon Martinez, starting in place of injured shortstop Alex Gonzalez, went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored. Patterson drove in four runs on the day.

Zambrano (3-1) struck out five and allowed no walks en route to making only 97 pitches in a game that took just 2 hours and 18 minutes to complete.

2B Aaron Miles and OF Matt Holliday recorded the only two Colorado hits - both singles - on the day. Zambrano has not allowed a run in his last 16 innings total, lowering his ERA to 2.18 for the season.

Game two of the series is Saturday at 1:20 CDT. Greg Maddux (2-2, 5.05) will face Colorado right-hander Jason Jennings (1-4, 10.57).

NOTES: After failing to score a run in 11 consecutive innings prior to the second inning of Thursday's victory over Arizona, the Cubs have now outscored opponents by a score of 21-0 in their last 12 frames.
