Notes and Quotes

The Cubs were idle Monday, getting set to prepare for a three-game home series with the San Francisco Giants starting Tuesday night. Both Mark Prior and Kerry Wood used the off day to their advantage, throwing from the Cubs bullpen at Wrigley Field in hopes of returning to big league action soon.

--RF Sammy Sosa was scratched from the lineup Sunday (May 16) with back spasms after sneezing twice.

--2B Mark Grudzielanek (slight tear in his right Achilles tendon) will start rehabbing in extended spring training in Mesa, Ariz., this week. Grudzielanek has been out of the lineup since April 10 and is still a few weeks away from returning.

--RHP Mark Prior (inflammation in his right Achilles heel and right elbow) is scheduled to throw in the Wrigley Field bullpen on Monday and Tuesday (May 17-18) and pitch three rehab innings at Class-A Lansing on Thursday (May 20). If all goes well and he continues to increase his workload every fifth day, he could be back with the parent club on the first weekend in June.

--RHP Kerry Wood (tightness in his right triceps) was scheduled to miss his start Sunday (May 16) at San Diego because of the injury, so he chose to serve his five-game suspension during that time. He was suspended for getting ejected after yelling at an umpire in an April 17 game against Cincinnati. He is scheduled to begin throwing Monday (May 17) at Wrigley Field.

--RHP Angel Guzman, who some consider is the Cubs' top prospect, made his first appearance since July shoulder surgery when he gave up two runs in 2 2/3 innings for Class A Daytona on Thursday (May 13) against St. Lucie. Guzman will be promoted to Double-A West Tenn shortly and could eventually be a call-up to the parent squad this season.

BY THE NUMBERS: 58-49-1 -- Cubs' record in their first games in 108 parks since 1876 after beating San Diego 6-1 at new Petco Park on Friday (May 14). They went on to sweep the series.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Greg Maddux told me, 'Boy, you're overqualified for this job.'" -- Cubs pitcher Mark Prior to an audience during a USC graduation ceremony. Prior received a degree in business.
