In Saturday's Cubs Minor League Notebook, Dwaine Bacon 0-for-last-13; two relievers lose for the first time in over a year; rarity for Matt Craig.
Iowa (13-22, 7.5 GB) fell to Colorado Spring 4-2 behind RHP Sergio Mitre. He allowed four runs and seven hits in seven innings. Mitre (2-4) is now 0-4 on the road this year with a 7.27 ERA in five starts. He was demoted to Iowa after INF Mike Fontenot was promoted to the big league club.
In terms of offense, there wasn't much to write home about for the prospects. All but one of the team's seven hits were provided by the veterans. 1B Micah Hoffpauir drove in a run and extended his hitting streak to eight games. Hoffpauir is currently batting some 90 points higher this month (.333) than he did in April (.243). OF Dwaine Bacon's struggles continued. Bacon finished 0-for-4 and is hitless in his last 13 at-bats at Iowa.
West Tenn Notes:
Stop the presses! First place West Tenn (25-10) has dropped back-to-back games for the first time all year. RHP Federico Baez lost for the first time in over a year as the Jaxx fell 4-3 in 10 innings to Chattanooga. Baez (3-1) allowed four hits and threw a wild pitch in one-plus inning. He faced three batters in the 10th and allowed singles to each hitter. It was his first loss since April 13, 2004.
LHP Renyel Pinto returned to Double-A following a hellish stint at Iowa to start 2005. He allowed three runs (all earned) and five hits in six innings on Friday night. Pinto's control, which plagued him at Triple-A as the Pacific Coast League leader in walks, remained intact on Friday night. He walked only one, threw a wild pitch and struck out three.
OF Matt Murton collected three hits and drove in a run to pace the Jaxx offense. Murton is still hitting above .400 with a .413 average in 31 games. He also has a team-best 24 RBI this year.
1B Matt Craig snapped out of a brief 0-for-8 skid and drove in a run. Craig also recorded a rare stolen base—his first of the season and just his fourth since 2004 began.
Daytona (17-15, 0.5 GB) and Lakeland went 14 innings and combined to use 13 pitchers as the Tigers edged the Cubs 5-4. Daytona surrendered first place in the loss, their fifth in the last six games. The top of Cub order – CF Chris Walker, 2B Issmael Salas, 3B Scott Moore – each drew seven at-bats in the loss. Moore and RF J.J. Johnson both collected three hits, including a home run apiece. 1B Kevin Collins also homered, his sixth of the year.
RHP J.R. Mathes turned in another impressive outing, allowing two runs and six hits in six innings. He notched six strikeouts to go with one walk. RHP Weston O'Brien (2-1) was charged with the loss, his first since April 24, 2004.
Peoria (15-20, 8 GB) was routed 7-0 in Beloit. LHP Chris Shaver (1-3), winless in his last four starts and recently plagued by a swollen ankle, took the loss. He allowed five runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.
OF Luis Montanez recorded a hit and has hit safely in seven of his last eight games. OF Bo Flowers also singled and has hit safely in six of his last seven games. Flowers is batting .346 for the month.
