Lawton Traded to Cubs

The Cubs have made at least one move to bolster their chances at a postseason run, acquiring Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Matt Lawton for OF Jody Gerut.

Gerut was acquired from the Cleveland Indians on July 18 for OF Jason Dubois. In 11 games with the Cubs, Gerut recorded just one hit - a double - in 14 at-bats.

Lawton batted .276 through 100 games with the Pirates. The 33-year-old was drafted in 1991 by the Minnesota Twins, where he began his major league career in 1995. Entering 2005, he had spent the last three years of his career with the Indians before being traded to Pittsburgh in the offseason following 2004.

Lawton is a career .269 hitter in 11 seasons between Minnesota, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and the New York Mets.
