Murton, Sing Off to Fast Starts in AFL

MESA, Ariz. -- After five games of Arizona Fall League play, the Mesa Solar Sox are just 1-4--the least of which has to do with the early performance of two Cubs position prospects.

Matt Murton and Brandon Sing each added two hits plus a walk on Monday as the Solar Sox lost to the Peoria Javelinas, 5-3, at HoHoKam Park. In three games, Sing is 5-for-10 with three doubles, three walks and three strikeouts. Murton has four hits in seven at-bats in his first two games and has drawn a pair of walks.

Eric Patterson and Buck Coats are the other two Cubs position prospects active in the Fall League this year. Coats, a member of the "taxi squad" and allowed to participate only in Wednesday and Saturday games, is 2-for-5 in his only showing so far. Patterson is 1-for-9 with two runs scored in two games.

On the mound, right-hander David Aardsma made his third appearance and did not surrender a run for the first time since league play began. He pitched an inning and a third Monday after giving up six runs in 3 1/3 previous innings entering the day.

Left-hander John Koronka saw action for the second time since being a late addition to the Solar Sox roster last week. He has struck out five and walked one in three innings of work.

The Solar Sox next game is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:05 p.m. when they face the Javelinas at Peoria's Sports Complex.
