1B Derrek Lee, who suffered a left shoulder injury in World Baseball Classic play against Japan on Sunday, had an MRI performed in Los
Angeles. The test showed wear and tear but nothing that would require surgery. Lee will miss Thursday's WBC game but should be able to play the next game for Team USA if it advances to the next round.
RHP Jerome Williams could have solid footing in the rotation early in the season if Mark Prior (shoulder problems) is forced to open the season on the disabled list. Williams was penciled in as the No. 5 starter because Kerry Wood and Wade Miller already are going to open the season on the disabled list. If Prior also goes on the DL, Williams moves up to No. 4 and the Cubs will use either LHP Rich Hill or RHP Angel Guzman at No. 5 or try to trade for another starter.
RHP Brian Boehringer, a veteran who was a late invitee to camp, was sent to minor league camp after posting a 20.23 ERA in three appearances in Cactus League play.
OF Adam Greenberg, who was beaned in his only major league plate appearance in 2005, was sent to minor league camp. He hit .286 in eight
Cactus League games.
1B Brandon Sing, who hit two homers in his first Cactus League start but developed allergies that affected his vision, was sent to minor league camp.
BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Surgeries endured by Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood. He had elbow surgery in 1999, shoulder surgery in 2005 and knee surgery
on March 7.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I said, 'Yeah, I'm Derrek Lee'" -- Cubs second baseman Jerry Hairston on what he told umpires after they asked him if he
knew his name after he was beaned by a pitch in a recent game.
